Panthers Pounce on Blazers

FREDERICK, Md.-Hood College (2-3) was defeated by Ferrum College (5-1) 19-4 Sunday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field. The Blazers fell behind early in the first half and were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Blazers had four different scorers in the contest, as they tried to use a balanced attack to thwart the Ferrum defense. Senior Miriah Stone was the first to get Hood on the board, as the midfielder tallied her second goal of the season midway through the first half. Just 30 seconds later sophomore KayLynn McCarthy scored her first goal of the season with the Blazers trying to find some momentum heading into halftime.

Sophomore Bailey Czech was next to find the net off a free position shot 20 minutes into the second half. The goal was Czech's eleventh of the season, which is good for second on the team. Sophomore Brigid Ayer finished the scoring for Hood with her sixth tally of the season deep into the second half. Senior attacker Caitlin Lawrence was held goalless for the first time this season, although the senior did pick up two assists in the contest. Ferrum was led by the six goals and five assists of Brooke Hewartson.

Hood goalkeeper Lauren Couch made eight saves in defeat. The freshman was tested for much of the game, however she came through with some nice saves and also had a team high in groundballs with four. The goalkeeping tandem of Amanda Cheney and Brianna Sugartan made four saves in the victory for Ferrum.

Hood will now have a rest period for spring break and will not return to action until March 23 against Penn State-Abington. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
