No. 11 Purple Knights Edged by Top-Ranked Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. - No. 11 Saint Michael's scored the first three goals at No. 1 Mercyhurst on Sunday and led at halftime before falling, 8-5, at Tullio Field. The Purple Knights were opening their season under interim head coach Pat Ivory '08. The Lakers, whose only loss since April 2011 was in the semifinal round of last year's NCAA Tournament, are 3-0.

Senior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) scored twice for Saint Michael's, pushing his career total to 98 goals, while junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) had a goal, an assist and four ground balls. Seniors Asa Sargent (Ripton, Vt./Middlebury Union) and Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) also recorded goals, and junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) totaled a career-high 15 saves and eight ground balls.

Senior Brian Scheetz (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) had two goals, an assist and 10 ground balls for the Lakers, while classmate James Chayka (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) tallied a pair of goals. Junior Brady Heseltine (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington District) notched a goal and an assist, and classmate Mitch McAvoy (Sherwood Park, Alberta/The Hill Academy) recorded eight ground balls and went 11 for 15 on face-offs. Junior Michael Grace (Warwick, N.Y./Assumption) made 15 saves.

Sargent scored 5:13 into the first quarter off senior Max Zuccarini's (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) assist before Antolino gave the visitors a 2-0 lead 3:55 later. Donnally added to the Saint Michael's advantage with 2:01 left in the quarter after receiving a pass from junior Connor Glackin (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's). The Lakers battled back to a 3-2 halftime deficit with a pair of markers during an 8:55 stretch in the second quarter, sparking an 8-0 run.

Mercyhurst netted four goals in the third quarter before Scheetz scored twice in the fourth for an 8-3 advantage with 13:11 remaining in the contest. Vanzo brought the visitors back to within four with a tally that came with 9:12 to play before Donnally added his second of the game 6:40 later. The Purple Knights could not crack the Laker defense in the final 2:31.

Saint Michael's returns to play on Wednesday when it travels to face Mercy (N.Y.) College at 3:00 p.m.
