Marlins Can't Close the Gap Against Bombers

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A big finish for Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team closed the gap on Ithaca College's Bombers on Tuesday on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, but it wasn't enough.

Sophomore Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) scored three unanswered goals in a span of five minutes to cut into Ithaca's lead, but the Bombers emerged with an 11-6 non-conference victory.

The Marlins (3-2) played Ithaca (3-0) tightly into the second period, trailing just 4-2 after Papetti scored off an assist from Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) with 13:23 remaining in the period. VWC had several opportunities to cut into the score, but could not connect with the net.

Ithaca went on to score four straight goals to end the half and added the first of the second half to open up a 9-2 lead. JuniorJames Lindsay (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge)put the Marlins back on the scoreboard with a goal at the 9:52 mark of the third period, but Ithaca came back to start the fourth period with two straight goals to open up the 11-3 spread.

Senior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) turned in an outstanding effort, recorded 17 saves, including seven in the third period when Ithaca out-shot VWC 12-5.

Ithaca finished with a 44-32 advantage in shots and a slim 42-38 margin in ground balls.

Papetti led VWC scoring with four goals. Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) also scored for the Marlins. Papetti also led the Marlins with six ground balls.

Joe Perkins (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), James Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Steve Danylnshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) all scored two goals each to lead a balanced Ithaca offense. Goalie Scott Sidnam (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) recorded six saves.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, March 16, hosting Shenandoah University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at 1:00 p.m.

The Bombers held the Marlins to just one goal in each of the first three periods, while powering to a 9-3 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan outscored Ithaca, 3-2, in the fourth frame to finalize the scoring at 11-6.

Four Bombers, senior Connor Lowe (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), junior Joe Perkins (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and sophomores James Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Steve Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), tallied twice. Juniors Pat Slawta (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Andrew Kristy (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) each netted one in addition to their game-best two assists apiece. Junior Casey Schattner (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) added one score and one assist, while senior Andrew Bruce (Lafayette, Calif./De La Salle) and Lowe each recorded an assist.

Kristy matched his career-high with six ground balls as Ithaca held a 42-38 gap in the category. Ithaca also outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 44-32, and won 13 of 21 faceoff attempts. Sophomore Matt Greenblatt (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) was 7 for 13 in faceoffs to lead the Bombers.

Ithaca netted the first two of the game for a 2-0 edge at 8:38 before the Marlins got on the board. Leading 3-1 at the end of the first, the Bombers struck again just one minute into the second. The host squad answered just 35 seconds later to cut within 4-2, but Ithaca scored four unanswered for an 8-2 lead at intermission.

Freshman Eli Gobrecht (Dryden, N.Y./Ithaca) won the faceoff to open the latter half en route to a Manila goal on a Kristy assist just 13 seconds into play. A Marlin goal had the game at 9-3 entering the fourth. The Bombers ran away with the lead with back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the fourth period. Virginia Wesleyan had a trio during the final five minutes of action to cut within five, 11-6.

The Bombers continue their spring training trip with a 7:00 p.m. game Thursday at Christopher Newport.
