Bison Outrun Blue Hose for First Victory

CLINTON, S.C. Katelyn Miller scored a career-high six goals and Claire Switala and Ryan Wenk both had five-point games to lead Bucknell to its first victory of the season, 20-7 at Presbyterian on Tuesday. Goalie Caroline O'Neill finished with 10 saves as the Bison topped the Blue Hose for the second straight year.

The Bison had plenty of offensive production while piling up a 35-22 shot advantage. Switala logged three goals and two assists and Wenk had two goals and three assists. Blair McDonald and Sophie Kleinert both had two goals and an assist, and Adrienne Wendling had a huge day with three goals, an assist, six draw controls and three ground balls.

With 13 minutes left in the first half Bucknell's lead was just 5-4, but the Bison closed the half on a 7-1 run to take a 12-5 halftime lead. Bucknell exploded for four goals in just 1:16, with Miller scoring three of those, to stretch the lead to 9-5. After Catherine Ellis scored for Presbyterian, Switala scored twice in a row, and Kleinert scored with 37 seconds left to give the Bison a commanding seven-goal lead at the break.

Bucknell then outscored the Blue Hose 8-2 in the second half, scoring the game's final six goals. Consecutive tallies by McDonald her first two goals of the season gave the Bison their first 10-goal lead, and Miller, Wendling and Wenk finished the scoring.

Ellis and Kelsey Rupsch scored two goals each for Presbyterian (1-7).

O'Neill made five saves in each half before giving way to Emily Fask for the final 3:06. Kerri Althouse had three ground balls and two caused turnovers to help lead a strong defensive effort.

Bridget Hogan stopped six shots and picked up four ground balls for Presbyterian.

After playing six straight road games, the Bison finally return home on Saturday to face defending Patriot League champion Navy at 1:00 p.m.
