American Picks Up First Win with Rout of Coastal Carolina

The American University lacrosse team used a 9-0 run to open the game and continued to roll to its first win of the season, downing Coastal Carolina, 16-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

American (1-6) dominated from the opening whistle, scoring five goals in the first four minutes of the game. Emily Burton continued the run with back-to-back tallies and Alex Lugovina and Kimberly Collins continued the streak for the 9-0 lead at the 15:05 mark. Lily Yednock put Coastal Carolina on the board with 3:50 remaining but Olivia Mangan notched her first of the day with seven seconds remaining in the first half to send the Eagles into the break with the 10-1 advantage.

American opened the second half with three straight goals for the 13-1 lead. Coastal Carolina (2-6) ended the run with consecutive scores from McKynsey Douglas and Charlotte O'Leary to make it a 10-goal game with 16:00 to play. The Eagles added two straight tallies once again before Yednock scored her second of the day on a free position shot with 8:27 remaining. Julie McKay registered the final goal of the contest on an unassisted tally with 5:33 to play for the 16-4 final score.

Burton finished with a season-high five goals while Collins and McKay each posted a hat trick for the Eagles. Emily Maher and Samantha Marshall recorded two assists. Lugovina led the team with five draw controls and five players collected two ground balls apiece. Teal Harrison made seven saves for American.

The Eagles held a 35-13 advantage in shots and 13-9 advantage in draw controls. Coastal Carolina finished with the 17-14 edge in ground balls collected.

American opens Patriot League play on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00 p.m. against Holy Cross.
