Geneseo Rolls to Upset Victory at No. 14 St. John Fisher
Pittsford, N.Y. – Geneseo (3-1) topped #14 St. John Fisher (3-1) 13-6 Wednesday. The win was the 100th for Coach Carly Ritchlin in her 10th year at Geneseo.
Ritchlin raised her record as the Knights' head coach to 100-45 (her overall record, including a season at Rochester Institute of Technology is 103-51). She is the program's winningest coach and joins four other current active coaches who've collected 100 wins at Geneseo (Jim Chen, tennis; Paul Dotterweich, both men's swimming & diving and women's swimming & diving; Jim Lyons, men's lacrosse; and Steve Minton, men's basketball).
The Knights scored the game's first three goals, then opened up a 6-1 lead. The host Cardinals pulled to within 7-4 early in the second half before junior attack Meredith Weber (Bellport/Bellport) scored consecutive goals to put Geneseo up by five.
Weber finished with a career-high four points. Her three goals matched a personal best.
Junior attack Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) scored a game-high four goals. She raised her season total to 18 points (15 goals, three assists) and moved into a fifth-place tie on the program's career scoring list with 162 points.
Junior midfielder Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) added three goals and an assist. She now has 16 points on the season (none goals, seven assists) and 126 in her career; Haggerty is six points away from moving into Geneseo's all-time top 10.
Geneseo's defense held the Cardinals – who'd averaged nearly 15 goals per game in winning their first three – to just 19 shots. Senior Julie Bernatzky (Mount Sinai/Mount Sinai) made nine saves.
Senior midfielder Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) picked up a team-best four ground balls.
Junior defender Kylie Caesar (Delmar/Bethlehem) matched a career-high with a team-leading three draw controls.
