Shenandoah Makes Pirates Walk the Plank

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University made its final non-conference tuneup before ODAC play begins a positive one with a 7-3 win over Southwestern (Texas) Wednesday evening.

The Hornets (5-1) used a three-goal third quarter to pull away from the Pirates (4-4) and equal their combined win total from the past three seasons.

Wednesday's game is the penultimate non-conference game of the season for SU. Coach Mike Kruger's club opens ODAC play on Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan. The final non-conference game is April 10 at Marymount.

After the two teams traded first quarter goals Wednesday night on the cold and windy Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf, Shenandoah took the lead for good as Matt Justice and Sean Ohlhaver score back-to-back goals 66 seconds apart early in the second.

Southwestern got an EMO goal five seconds before halftime, but the Hornets answered with the only three goals of the third and the initial tally of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead 28 seconds into the final stanza.

The Pirates scored a man-down goal at 11:55, but could get no closer.

Shenandoah outshot its visitors 39-16 and had a 49-39 advantage in groundballs.

The two teams split 14 faceoffs.

Tyler Quinn made six saves in the win.
