Cobras Cage the Bulldogs

HARTSVILLE, S.C. Coker scored 18 goals en route to an 18-15 win over Wingate on Thursday (Mar. 14) afternoon in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action.

A trio of Cobras picked up hat tricks in the game, including an impressive five-goal performance from Keith LaClair.

Wingate took the early lead, 4-3 after the first quarter, but the Cobras responded with six goals in the second to take a 9-7 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, both teams scored five goals, making it a 14-12 game in favor of the Cobras heading into the fourth. Wingate tied the game at 15 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, but the Cobras put home three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes to take home the 18-15 victory.

LaClair finished the game with five goals and an assist, while Andy Campos had three goals and two assists. Mike Martiello and Timothy Smith added three goals and an assist each, and Ryan Maurer scored a goal and dished out three assists. Also scoring for Coker were John Bretton, Steven Zolezzi and Joshua Taylor. Steve Marciano and Josh Smith each added an assist.

Tim Ryan and Josh Masciarelli split time between the pipes for the Cobras. Ryan made 11 saves, while Masciarelli picked up four.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 20) when they travel to Mount Olive College to face the Trojans in a Conference Carolinas game. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Hartsville, S.C.---Coker scored the final three goals of the game, collecting an 18-15 victory over Wingate Thursday afternoon at Byerly Park. Sophomore midfield Keith LaClair (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the host Cobras with five goals and one assist. Senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.), junior midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals each for the Bulldogs.

With the victory, Coker improves to 2-7 overall. Wingate is 1-8 overall. The Cobras return to Conference Carolinas play Wednesday, visiting Mount Olive for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Bulldogs host Deep South Conference foe Florida Tech Sunday. The first face-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.

Coker led 15-12 following a goal by freshman attack Mike Martiello (Westbury, N.Y.) three minutes into the fourth quarter. Wingate rallied, as senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) and sophomore midfield Zak Goings (Haymarket, Va.) scored unassisted goals 19 seconds apart to make the score 15-14 Coker. Bulldog senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) completed the 3-0 flurry on an assist from Vogrig to tie the game 15-15 with 9:58 left in regulation.

LaClair tallied the game-winner at the 8:37 mark on an assist from junior midfield Timothy Smith (Commack, N.Y.). Smith and junior attack Andy Campos (Los Angeles, Calif.) added single goals in the waning moments to provide the Cobras a cushion. The Campos goal concluded the scoring with 4:17 remaining.

The third quarter was a 5-5 draw, as Coker took a 14-12 lead entering the final frame. Coker's Smith scored two goals in the third quarter. Press had three goals in the third quarter for the Bulldogs. Vogrig and Goings added one goal each. Press (2:31) and Goings (1:31) concluded the third quarter with goals to cut the Wingate deficit to 14-12.

The Cobras rallied for a 9-7 lead at halftime, thanks to two second-quarter goals each from Martiello and LaClair. Coker's Martiello (12:24) and Wingate's Chase Clifton (11:52) traded goals to start the second stanza, allowing the Bulldogs to maintain a slim 5-4 lead. Coker answered with a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 edge on a Martiello goal at the 6:21 plateau. LaClair assisted his teammate on the man-up tally.
