Fighting Scots Score Six Unanswered to Top Presidents

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Senior midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) scored a career-high five goals, but six unanswered Wooster goals early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Fighting Scots pulled away for a 13-8 victory over Washington & Jefferson Thursday night at John A. Papp Stadium.

The Presidents (2-2) had their two-match win streak snapped, while the Fighting Scots evened their record at 1-1. W&J and Wooster were meeting for the first time in history.

Wooster scored four of the first five goals, but three goals by Kraus during the final seven minutes of the half brought the Presidents to within 6-5 at halftime.

Kraus continued her scoring barrage 47 seconds into the second half to tie the match; however, the Fighting Scots answered with a 6-0 run behind three goals from Ellie Hudson-Heck. Clare Nelson-Johnson added two scores during the spurt, which put the hosts ahead 12-6 with 12:59 remaining.

During the middle of Wooster's game-changing rally, W&J senior goalkeeper Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was injured and forced to leave at the 19:10 mark. Sophomore Kelsey Roetenberg (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) filled in for McLellan and allowed four goals, while making four saves.

McLellan notched five saves before being forced out by the injury. In addition to Kraus' five goals, senior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored twice and freshman midfielder Diana Harvey (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) notched one goal.

Wooster outshot W&J by a 31-19 margin, but Washington & Jefferson held the edge in draw controls (12-9). The Presidents also scored on 5 of 8 free-position shots.

Hudson-Heck scored five times to lead the Fighting Scots, while Shawna Ferris had eight saves in goal.

W&J now heads south during the campus' spring break period to play three matches in West Palm Beach, Fla., starting with Monday's 11:00 am game versus Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
