Maritime Tops Kings Point to Win Sound Shootout

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 14, 2013) Maritime won the first-ever Sound Shootout and its first game of the season Thursday night against rival Kings Point by the score of 23-8. The Privateers improve their record to 1-2, while the Mariners' record drops 0-3.

Maritime started the game strong with six goals before Kings Point scored its first. The Privateers finished the first half with a 16-6 lead. The second half started no differently with Maritime coming out of half strong, scoring another six goals again before the Mariners' first.

Freshman Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor N.Y./Washingtonville) led the Privateers in goals with six while winning four draw controls. Close behind in scoring with four goals apiece were her classmates Jackie Golematis (Douglaston, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and Caroline Reynolds (Oswego N.Y./Oswego), who each also won four draw controls, while sophomore Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Boward) who lead the team in draw controls with eight.

Golematis led the team with three groundballs. Freshman Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside N.Y./Oceanside) defended the Privateers' goal for the whole game, making nine saves for her first collegiate victory.

For Kings Point, its eight goals were split between seniors Jessica Willey and Kristen Bell. They each scored four for the Mariners. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Allison made 15 saves on the night.

The Sound Shootout trophy was presented to second-year head coach Ann Denning and her team at the conclusion of the game.

The Privateers return to action on Sunday afternoon, when they travel to play their first in-conference match at Saint Joseph's College as 12:00 p.m..
