Mirza, Datino Lead Aggies Past Gaels

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Hannah Mirza tallied five goals, while senior Elizabeth Datino added three goals and two assists, to lead a well-balanced UC Davis effort in a 14-10 win over Iona in action at Aggie Stadium Friday afternoon. Both teams move to 2-5 for the season.

Besides the goals totals by Mirza and Datino, sophomore Meghan Jordan tallied four assists and freshman Mary Doyle picked up five draw controls for the Aggies. Sophomore defender Sara Quero posted eight ground balls, all in the Aggies' backfield.

For the Gaels, senior attacker Kylie Gregory scored four goals. This game also held a family connection, as starting Iona defender Lauren Henwood is the younger sister to first-year Aggie head coach Kate Henwood. The younger Henwood posted a ground ball and draw control for Iona.

UC Davis dominated the first half in terms of possession time but struggled to put up much on the actual scoreboard, outshooting the Gaels by a 16-6 margin but managing just a 3-2 lead in scoring. Iona goalkeeper Maria Ortiz played a large part in holding down the Aggies, recording 10 of her 11 saves before the break.

However, both teams settled down in the second half, reducing their combined turnovers from 30 to 10 while piling up 19 combined goals. Jordan had two assists while Datino and a goal and an assist in a 6-2 UC Davis start to the period, pushing the Aggies to a 9-4 advantage.

Iona managed flourishes of consecutive goals on three separate occasions but UC Davis maintained at least a three-goal edge down the stretch.

UC Davis takes a break for final examinations before returning to action for a road trip at Howard, Navy and Drexel from March 25-30.
