Hawks Rally But Fall on Late Goal to Argonauts

ROME -- The Shorter Hawks fell behind early and rallied to have a late lead before dropping the home game against Notre Dame de Namur, 15-14.

The visiting Argonauts scored eight first quarter goals to lead 8-4 after just fifteen minutes of play. Two Hawks goals were scored by Scott Dangel for his first scores of the season, while Kyle Morris and Matt Kristiansen each found the back of the net.

Despite being down early, Shorter (2-6) rallied back. The Hawks outscored the Argos 4-2 in the second quarter and 3-1 in the third quarter to enter the final 15:00 with the scored tied, 11-11.

The second quarter saw two Hawks doing the scoring as Kyle VanKauwenberg and James VandenBrink each scoring a pair of goals including VandenBrink notching one with a man up situation thanks to an NDNU penalty.

Kristiansen scored twice in the third, including a man up goal with an assists from Andrew King. King recorded the first of his two second-half goals late in the third period to tie the game.

King, Benjamin Janes scored the first two goals for the Hawks in the final quarter, with the goal for Janes giving Shorter the 13-12 lead with 9:16 to play.

VanKauwenberg scored his final goal after a pair of Argo scores to tie the game one more time with 2:03 remaining.

Carter Olson had one last effort in him for the visiting team, scoring the final goal of the night with 23 seconds left it was Carter's fourth goal of the night.

J.R. Willers faced 44 Argos shots, making 14 saves.

Shorter picked up a trio of goals from Kristiansen and VanKauwenberg, while VandenBrink, King, and Dangel each scored twice. Zachery Dirkse assisted on four Hawks goals

The Hawks went 3 for 7 on man up opportunities, while the defense prevented NDNU from scoring in with an advantage, going 0 for 8.

Notre Dame de Namur held an advantage in ground balls, 38-28, and winning 20 of the 33 face offs.

The Hawks will be on the road this weekend visiting Lenoir-Rhyne for a Sunday game at 1:00 pm. Shorter will return home next Saturday when Emmanuel visits Ben Brady Field for a 1:00 pm start on March 23.
