Gennaro Leads #20 Navy by Bucknell in Snow-Shortened Game

LEWISBURG, Pa. Aimee Gennaro scored six first-half goals to lift Navy to a 9-3 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League women's lacrosse game that was stopped early due to a blanket of snow covering Graham Field. The Bison played the Mids even for the first 21 minutes, but a 6-0 run to end the first half was the difference.

The contest was moved up from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m. in an attempt to beat the predicted afternoon snow, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Light snow began falling during warm-ups, and it intensified just as the game was getting started.

Navy took a 2-0 lead on Gennaro's first goal of the day at the 23:01 mark. But the Bison got on the board right off the ensuing draw, as freshman Sam Rickels picked up the loose ball and dodged a couple of defenders on her way to a pretty goal just 21 seconds after the Gennaro score.

Bucknell tied it 64 seconds later when Madison Hurwitz found Claire Switala in the slot for the equalizer. Navy went back ahead on an unassisted goal by Kathy Young, but again the Bison drew even on a free-position attempt by Sophie Kleinert with 9:11 left in the half.

After the Kleinert goal, the game was delayed briefly in order to have snow cleared off the field markings. Gennaro dominated after the resumption of play, scoring five times in that span, four of them coming off assists from DePompeo, who was set up behind the goal. Gennaro scored three straight goals in a span of just 1:44 to make it 6-3, and her tally with 1:15 left in the half capped the scoring.

Neither team took a shot in the second half. With heavy snow falling and field conditions worsening, Navy held the ball for long stretches, and once 48 minutes had been played, making it an official game, the officials stopped play for good with 11:16 remaining on the clock.

Navy finished with a 15-9 shot advantage. Both teams secured seven draw controls, and Bucknell committed 17 turnovers to Navy's 12 in tough playing conditions.

Bucknell fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-2 in the Patriot League, while Navy is 8-1, 2-0.

The Bison are back in action next Saturday at Lehigh 1:00 p.m.

LEWISBURG, Pa. - No. 20 Navy (8-1, 2-0 PL) won a snow-shortened game at Bucknell (1-7, 0-2 PL) by a 9-3 score at Graham Field on Saturday. The game was called with 11:16 remaining in the second half due to extremely poor weather conditions and a snow-covered playing field.

NCAA women's lacrosse games need to reach the 48-minute mark to become official and the game officials decided to call the game at the first stoppage after that point. The game was originally scheduled for 1:00 PM but was moved up to 11:00 AM in hopes of missing the snow storm.

"We went back-and-forth with Bucknell in the first half but then we were able to take control before halftime," said head coach Cindy Timchal. "We played in some really tough weather conditions today and the field had basically become unplayable when the officials called it."

Junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) led Navy with six goals and senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) had five points on one goal and four assists.

It took Navy just 58 seconds to score as DePompeo buried an unassisted tally at 29:02 to put Navy up, 1-0. Gennaro then scored her first goal of the game, also unassisted, six minutes later.

Bucknell responded with back-to-back goals, first on a strike by Sam Rickels and then 1:01 later on a goal by Claire Switala.
