Hawks Defeated by Visiting Bears

ONEONTA, NY- Visiting Potsdam received goals from eight different players and trailed just once as Bears defeated the Hartwick 14-5 on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks fall to 3-2 on the season while the Bears up their record to 2-1.

It was the Hawks who struck first in the game when Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored to put Hartwick ahead 1-0 56 seconds into the opening quarter. The lead was short-lived as Potsdam answered back on a Rob Kunz score to even the game at 1-1 at 12:48.

The two teams battled back and forth with neither gaining an advantage for the next eight minutes of game time. Giuseppe Rice (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) was called for a delay of game penalty at 5:18 and 21 seconds later Robbie Ashlaw assisted Kyle Nicholas on the man-up goal to give Potsdam a 2-1 lead. The Bears would score twice more in the period to go ahead 4-1.

It was 5-1 Bears at 13:54 of the second quarter on Kunz's second score of the day. Hartwick ended the 5-0 Potsdam run with a goal from Hughes to make it 5-2 at 7:46. The Bears offense would not let up as they scored four more times in the stanza and led 9-2 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Derek Frost tacked on his third score of the game at 13:42 to increase the Bear lead to 10-2. After a Potsdam penalty, Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) would hook up with Hughes for the goal to make it 10-3. After another Bear goal, Ciolino scored with an assist from Elliott Rose (Brick, NJ/Hopewell Valley) and it was 11-4 Potsdam. The Bears would go on to score three more times and Hughes scored with 1:28 left to play to complete the scoring in the game.

Hughes led the Hawks with four goals on the afternoon. Ciolino had one goal and one assist. Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) got the start in goal and stopped five shots in 47:50 of game time. He was replaced by Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) and he had two saves in the final 12:10 of the contest.

Potsdam was led by Frost's three goals. He added two assists. Jeff Seager, Kunz, Pat Mahar, and Nicholas all had a pair of goals. Ashlaw, Pat Bonafede, and Ryan McConnell had one goal each. Stefan Sloma had 11 saves for the Bears in goal in 55:56 of playing time. He was relieved by Ryan Duffy who stopped three shots.

Potsdam led in shots, 36-30. Hartwick had a narrow edge in ground balls, 21-19. Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had four ground balls to lead 'Wick.

Hartwick won 14 of 22 face-offs. Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) won eight of those while Shane Latsko (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) was successful on six.

The Hawks will go on the road next Saturday to face Cazenovia in a non-conference contest. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Potsdam (2-1) scored a season-high 14 goals on the road as they rolled to a 14-5 hammering of Hartwick (3-2) on Saturday afternoon. Junior midfielder Derek Frost (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) matched a career-best five points with three goals and two assists to lead the Bears, while Jeff Seager (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston) added two goals and one assist.

After falling behind just 56 seconds into the contest on a Hawk goal from Harry Hughes, the Potsdam offense kicked into gear, going on a 5-0 run. Junior captain Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) tied the game at 12:48 with an assist from Frost.

After nearly eight scoreless minutes, senior attackman Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) struck for two in a row to put the Bears up for good. The first came in a man-up opportunity at 4:57 from junior midfielder Robbie Ashlaw (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and the second at 2:59 from junior attackman Kevin Logan (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central). Frost scored with 52 seconds left in the quarter on a pass from Seager and Potsdam led 4-1 after 15 minutes.
