Penikis, Sommi Combine for Nine as Garnet Surge Past Widener

CHESTER, Pa. Combining for nine goals, senior Annalise Penikis and junior Corinne Sommi led Swarthmore to a 17-5 victory over Widener on Saturday afternoon for the annual 320 Challenge match-up.

With the victory, Swarthmore improves to 4-0 on the season and the Pride drops to 2-2 with the loss. The Garnet remain ahead in the 320 Challenge standings with a 9-3 advantage.

Penikis finished with five goals and three assists, while Sommi collected four goals and one assist in the winning effort. Four other players contributed goals for the Garnet. Caroline Murphy snagged a team-high six ground balls, while Elyse Tierney and Nicole Vanchieri each swiped four draws.

Between the pipes, all three Garnet keepers had playing time combining for five saves including three from freshman Connie Bowen in 20 minutes of action. Junior Michelle Ammerman played the entire first half making two stops.

Widener shared the offensive equally as there were five different goal scorers for the Pride. Mackenzie Lindquist forced a game-high four caused turnovers and scooped up six ground balls. Goalie Megan Dunn made seven saves in a complete game.

The home standing Pride got on board first at 26:19 with an unassisted tally from Meghan Garvey. Sophomore Sara Lentricchia followed less than a minute later for Swarthmore's first tally. Lauren Staedt gave Widener the lead again at 23:07 before the visitors went on a seven-goal run including four from Penikis.

In the final two minutes of the first half each team tallied one with Swarthmore in front 9-3 entering the intermission. The Garnet outshot the Pride 22-8 in the first 30 minutes of play and took 11 of 13 draws finishing the contest with a 15-9 advantage.

Once again, Widener tallied first in the second half, but the Garnet went on another seven-goal scoring run six different Garnet players tallied - to set the score at 16-4 with 10 minutes remaining. Caitlyn Mullner scored an unassisted goal at the 9:00 mark for Widener's last tally of the game. Sophomore Elizabeth Bachman collected her first goal of the season to wrap up the 17-5 Garnet victory.

Swarthmore returns to action with a four-game stretch at Clothier Field beginning with Amherst College on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m.
