Marlins Don't Provide Warm ODAC Welcome to Shenandoah

VIRGINIA BEACH -- There wasn't any hospitable welcome into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for Shenandoah University's Hornets Saturday in a men's lacrosse game at Virginia Wesleyan College.

The host Marlins shutout the Hornets 4-0 in the first period and rolled on to a 17-3 victory in the conference opener for both teams. It was also Shenandoah's first men's lacrosse game in the league.

Sophomore Devynn Kelly (Harwood, Md./Southern) scored twice in the first quarter to help Virginia Wesleyan (4-2, 1-0) set the pace of the game. Goals by sophomore Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) and junior Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) extended VWC's lead to 6-0 before Shenandoah (5-2, 0-1) hit the scoreboard.

The Hornets notched back-to-back goals by Matt Justice (Elkridge, Md./DeMatha) and Bryan Pope (Allentown, N.J./Allentown), but saw Virginia Wesleyan come back strong. The Marlins tallied four goals to close the half, two by Pappas, as VWC opened up a 10-2 lead at the break.

Virginia Wesleyan never let up after that, outscoring Shenandoah 7-1 in the second half to post the lop-sided win.

A balanced Virginia Wesleyan offense was sparked by a dominant effort in face-offs, as the Marlins won 17 of 24 overall, including 10 by sophomore Sam Limpert (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney). The Marlins finished with a 48-39 advantage in shot, and a 59-34 difference in ground balls. Limpert picked up six grounders and senior Corey Bauer (Lititiz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), rookie Ruben Pena (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Papetti added five each for the Marlins.

Pappas and rookie Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) scored seven points each for the Marlins. Pappas led in goals with five and Currier added three goals and four assists.

Senior Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) also recorded three goals and sophomore John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) had one. Senior Spencer McCready (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Pappas recorded two goals each and James Lindsay (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and Joe Zirpolo (Suffolk/Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) had one each.

Nick Rondeau (Suffolk/King's Fork) scored a goal for SU and Colin Fowler (Haymarket/Battlefield) recorded an assist.

Shenandoah starting gooalie Tyler Quinn (McLean/Husson) finished with 15 saves. Bauer recorded 10 for the Marlins in 52 minutes, before sophomore Rory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) finished the game and recorded three saves.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, March 23, playing an ODAC contest at Roanoke College at 2:00 p.m.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Host Virginia Wesleyan scored the initial six goals of the game on its way to a 17-3 ODAC victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) held SU (5-2, 0-1) off the board for the first 19:13 of the contest as it raced out to the 6-0 lead.

Freshman Matt Justice finally snapped the scoreless string with his unassisted goal at 10:47 of the second, followed by a Bryan Pope goal 1:41 later, but this would be as close as the Hornets would get.

The Marlins reeled off a 6-0 run that sandwiched halftime, and after Colin Fowler fed Nick Rondeau at 6:10 of the third, scored the final five goals of the game.

VWC held a 48-39 advantage in shots, scooped up 59 of 93 groundballs and won 17 of 24 draws at the faceoff 'x'. Tyler Quinn made 15 saves in the losing effort.

Shenandoah is off until traveling next Saturday night for an ODAC contest at Randolph.
