Southern Maine Withstands Castleton Rally

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Anh Nguyen (South Portland, Maine) snapped a 10-10 tie with her only goal of the game coming with 7:39 to play, and Southern Maine went on to defeat Castleton State, 12-10, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win was the fourth straight for the undefeated Huskies, and snapped a string of four straight losses to the Spartans. The winless Spartans dropped their fourth straight decision.

Nguyen weaved her way through the Spartan defense and beat rookie goalie Meghan Els (Commack, N.Y.) for her sixth goal of the season. Junior Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) would tack on an insurance marker just over four minutes later to secure the victory.

Kelly led all scorers with five goals and one assist for six points. Senior Samantha Purcell (Durham, Maine/Lisbon) tallied two goals and had one assist, and junior Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) picked up two goals and had seven draw controls.

Junior goalie Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) picked up her fourth win of the season recording 14 saves for the Huskies.

Junior Jennilee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Spartan attack with three goals. She also scooped up a game-high seven ground balls and had three draw controls. Classmate Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) had two goals and one assist. Els finished the match registering 14 saves.

The game was back-and-forth throughout. Castleton tallied three goals in a span of two minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Southern Maine, sparked by two goals from Kelly, struck back with four straight goals to assume a 5-3 advantage. Mark and Kelly traded goals 41 second apart to make it 6-4. Mark beat Vogel in the final minute of the half to leave the Huskies with a one-goal edge at the break.

Southern Maine controlled the opening five minutes of the second half to expand its lead to 9-5. Junior Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic), Purcell and Forster tallied goals to give USM its biggest lead of the game.

Sophomore Kate Auer (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) converted a free-position attempt to spark a run of four straight Spartan goals in less than four minutes of play to tie the score at 9-9. Junior Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.), and seniors Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.) and Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) had the other goals.

Rookie Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) restore the lead to the Huskies with 12:41 to play, but Clark equalized for the Spartans just 38 seconds later. After more than four minutes of scoreless play, Nguyen potted what proved to be the game-winning score.

Southern Maine travels to Husson University on Wednesday (5:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game. Castleton host Rensselaer under the lights on Thursday (7:00 pm.).

Gorham, Maine - The Spartans erased a four-goal second half deficit but couldn't convert when it counted, falling 12-10 to Southern Maine in Gorham on Saturday.

Jennilee Mark led the Spartans' offense with three goals, seven ground balls, and two forced turnovers, and Sarah Clark scored twice with an assist, but the Spartan were held scoreless for the final twelve minutes, falling to 0-4 to begin the season.

Southern Maine lit up the scoreboard first with a goal from Jacki Kelly just 1:50 into the game to put the Huskies up 1-0. That score was followed by three consecutive goals from the Spartans. Sarah Clark, Jennilee Mark, and Mariah Lesure each notched goals within a 2:00 stretch, putting Castleton up 3-1.

The Huskies responded with a 4-0 run of their own. Samantha Purcell notched a goal before Kelly scored two consecutive goals to give Southern Maine a 4-3 lead. Then Rosie Forster added to the Huskies' tally to extend the home team's advantage with 12:35 remaining in the half.
