Marist Withstands Third Quarter Surge by Detroit

UDM (0-6, 0-1 MAAC) trailed 9-4 with 7:19 left in the third when the Titans scored three-straight goals to pull within two, 9-7. The run started with a Marist turnover and after sophomore Chris Shevins (Merrick, N.Y./Mepham) picked up the ground ball, junior Scott Drummond (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) was able to find Birney for a score.

Birney then set up the offense feeding junior Alex Maini (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) for a goal with 1:51 left. Melucci then caused a turnover and he eventually got the ball back in his stick, firing one past the goalie with seven seconds left in the quarter to get the red, white and blue within 9-7.

The play also resulted in two penalties for Marist (5-0, 1-0 MAAC) and UDM had a two-man advantage for a minute, but was not able to get any closer as Marist killed that opportunity and then extended its lead to 11-7 with less than eight minutes left in the game. A goal by Birney made it 11-8, but neither team scored in the final 7:27 as the Red Foxes pulled out the win.

It was a low scoring first period to start the contest, but the Titans struck first as sophomore Thomas Sible (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) netted his first collegiate goal with under three minutes left in the opening period.

Masterson then tallied the next two goals for UDM as Hebden picked up his first collegiate point on the assist to make it 2-0 early in the second and Melucci found Masterson to put the red, white and blue up 3-1, with 11:14 remaining in the half.

Marist then scored four-straight goals to jump in front, 5-3, before Hebden came up with his first career goal with 13 seconds left in the second to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the break. The Red Foxes would keep the pressure on with another 4-0 run to open a 9-4 advantage midway through the third period.

UDM's defense stood strong with the man-down holding Marist to 1 of 6, but the Red Foxes outshot the Titans, 37-26, and won the battle of loose balls, 40-32.

Senior A.J. Levell (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) made 11 saves in net and had five ground balls, while senior Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, Ont./Holy Cross) picked up a team-high seven GB's to go with a pair of caused turnovers. Senior Jamie Hebden (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) had two caused turnovers in the contest and senior John Dwyer (Novi, Mich./Catholic Central) had four ground balls.

Detroit will return home to face VMI next Saturday, Mar. 23. The game is set for a Noon start at Titan Field.
