No. 9 UVa Drops Weather-Delayed Nail-Biter to #12 Ohio State

A non-releasable penalty early in the third quarter led to a man-up goal from Schuss, assisted by sophomore Regan Comeault, 39 seconds into the second half for a 7-5 Buckeye advantage. The Cavaliers scored the next two goals to tie the game at 7 with 10:09 remaining. Brown was able to get to a loose ball after the ensuing faceoff and put Ohio State back ahead (8-7) eight seconds later but Rob Emery answered with a goal at 7:46 for the game's fourth tie. Planning scored unassisted to push the Buckeyes back on top (9-8) with 5:29 remaining in the period and Schuss had a shot go off a Virginia player and in with four seconds left for a 10-8 Ohio State lead after the third quarter.

After the weather delay, Virginia tied the game at 10-all with goals from Matt White at 9:15 and Ryan Tucker at 1:48. UVA won the next faceoff but Darius Bowling caused a turnover and got the groundball and Alexander was able to score just 17 seconds after Virginia had tied the game. UVA won the next groundball and maintained possession. An offsides call on Ohio State gave UVA a man-up chance with 26 seconds left. Dutton saved O'Reilly's shot with five seconds left to preserve the Buckeye lead. Virginia had the ball and took a timeout with 3.8 seconds left but could not get a shot off.

Ohio State was outhsot, 33-27, in the game. Dutton made six saves for the Buckeyes, with Virginia goalie Rhody Heller making eight stops.

Ohio State converted both of its man-up chances and stopped the Cavaliers on their one chance, which came in the fourth quarter. Virginia was ahead in groundballs, 39-24. Italiano had eight to lead the Buckeyes and Robby Haus and Bowling each had three. Each team won 12 faceoffs; Wilkes won 10 and Bowling added two for the Buckeyes. Italiano and junior Dominic Imbordino each had two caused turnovers in the win.
