Southern Maine Defeats Maine Maritime for First Win

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) scored a game-high four goals to lead Southern Maine to a 16-7 victory over visiting Maine Maritime in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win was the first of the season for the Huskies after three straight defeats to open the season. The Mariners dropped their fourth straight game and remain winless on the season.

Baker also added an assist to have a game-high five points. Senior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) had two goals and two assists, and classmate Steve Ribero (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in two goals and one assist. Seniors Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Mike Orlando (Hanover, Mass.) and junior Dylan Kenney (Portland, Maine) each contributed two goals.

Senior goalie Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made eight saves in the USM cage to earn his first win of the season.

Senior Alex Hermes (Fallsington, Pa.) led the Mariners scoring three goals and won 12 of 17 faceoffs. Sophomore Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) produced a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Erik Milles (Bangor, Maine) recorded eight saves.

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter on goals by Orlando and sophomore Eddie Barrasso (Wilmington, Mass.). Hermes countered with his first two goals to even the score 10 minutes into the match.

White ignited a run of 10 straight USM goals tallying his first marker with 3:16 to play in the first quarter. Orlando and Baker found the net before the end of the quarter to stake the home side to a 5-2 lead.

Ribero and Kenney each scored twice in the second quarter as USM outscored MMA 5-0. USM went into the halftime break with a comfortable 10-2 advantage.

Baker and White scored in the opening three minutes of the third period to push the lead to 12-2 before Hermes snapped the run of USM goals with his third goal coming with 7:11 remaining. The Mariners never got closer than eight goals the rest of the way.

Southern Maine will host Mount Ida College in the second of five straight home games on Thursday (4:00 p.m.). Maine Maritime is off until next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to New England College for its North Atlantic Conference opener.
