Retrievers Score First 8 to Soar by Seahawks

Staten Island, NY UMBC defeated Wagner 16-3 behind four goals apiece by Alyssa Semones and Abby Wilson while Shannon Harkey and Jordan Lyons each scored three goals for the Retrievers.

Wagner's three goals were registered by a trio of freshmen in Casey McCarthy (Cypres, TX/ Cy-Fair), Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/ Clearview) and Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township). Sophomore Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township) added an assist for the Seahawks.

UMBC, which improved to 6-2 on the season, raced out to an 8-0 lead before Mills found Peterson, her former high school teammate, for a goal with 6:10 left in the opening half. The Retrievers led 10-1 at halftime and built the lead to 15-1 before consecutive goals by McCarthy and Tumolo made it 15-3. Harkey capped the day's scoring with a tally with 2:30 left for UMBC to fashion the final score at 16-3.

UMBC outshot Wagner 33-10 led in ground balls 14-10 while winning 14 of 21 draw controls.

The Seahawks now begin Northeast Conference play by taking to the road this weekend, with contests at Mount St. Mary's on Friday, March 22 at 4:00 pm and at Monmouth on Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 pm.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. UMBC opened Monday's contest against Wagner with eight-straight goals en route to a 16-3 victory at Hameline Field. Sophomores Alyssa Semones (Westminster/Westminster/Penn State) and Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) tallied four goals apiece in the victory and each added an assist for a combined 10 points.

UMBC (6-2) has won four of its five contests, while Wagner (4-4) has dropped three in a row.

Junior midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley/Florida) led things off with her 15th goal of the season, followed by a score from junior Mary Milligan (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC), as the black and gold scored on two of its first five shots.

Wilson whizzed past her defender to give the Retrievers a 3-0 lead and just 20 seconds later, Semones drove into the middle for her first goal of the contest. Wilson and Semones traded off goals twice more, as the Retrievers jumped out in front 8-0 with 8:53 remaining in the first half.

Wagner stopped the run with its first goal of the game, coming from Stephanie Peterson, at the 6:10 mark, but the Retrievers wasted no time getting back to work, as sophomore Jordan Lyons (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's Secondary) came from behind the net to tab her first score. Harkey would add one more, beating Seahawks goalkeeper Katie Ferraro low on a free position shot with 29 seconds left in the period, sending the black and gold to the locker room with a 10-1 advantage.

The Retrievers continued where they left off before the break, with another 5-0 run to start the second half 7-0 run dating back to the end of the first period. Wilson and Semones connected to start things off, followed by another score from Lyons that originated behind the net and Wilson's goal 50 seconds later put UMBC on top 13-1.

Junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), the Retrievers' goal leader coming into the contest, tabbed a goal with 19:50 remaining in the contest and 1:03 later, Semones won the draw and dished off a pass to Lyons for the score and hat trick the first of her collegiate career.

The Seahawks put together two consecutive scores, the first coming from freshman Casey McCarthy following a UMBC foul and the second on a free position shot from Kimmy Tumolo that beat Retrievers' goalkeeper Kendal Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring) high, to make it 15-3. Mason finished the afternoon with five saves.

Harkey rounded out the scoring with her second-straight hat trick.

UMBC held a 33-10 shot advantage, including a 23-5 margin in the first half. The black and gold also controlled the draws 14-7 in the contest, with Semones leading UMBC with six.

The Retrievers open America East action on Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Boston University for a 1:00 p.m. start.
