No. 3 Limestone Scores 16 Straight to Run by Wingate

Wingate, N.C. -- No. 3 Limestone tallied 16 unanswered goals en route to a 22-8 victory over Wingate on Tuesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.

Eleven different players scored goals for the visiting Saints (8-1 overall). Senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.) and senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) scored three goals each for the host Bulldogs (2-9 overall).

Clifton sandwiched two goals around a Womble score to give Wingate a 3-0 lead at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter. Bulldog junior midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) assisted on the second Clifton score.

Limestone scored five goals in the final 3:02 of the opening frame to take a 5-3 lead. Saint junior attack Todd Nakasuji (Ajax, Ontario) and senior attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, B.C.) scored two goals each during the quarter-closing flurry.

Nakasuji scored again seven seconds into the second stanza to push the LC lead to 6-3. Nakasuji, Loewen and senior attack Corey Rich (Sacramento, Calif.) scored three goals each during Limestone's 16-0 run, as the Saints turned a 3-0 deficit into a 16-3 advantage with 13:38 remaining in the third quarter.

The two teams battled on even terms the rest of the way, as Wingate held a 4-2 edge in the fourth quarter. On the afternoon, senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) had two goals for the Bulldogs. Freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) and senior attack/midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had two assists each for the hosts.

Loewen, Rich and Nakasuji had four goals each for the Saints. Loewen added a team-best three assists to his statistical ledger, while Rich passed out two helpers. LC senior midfield Tor Reinholdt (Port Moody, B.C.) had two goals and three assists, while senior midfield Zach Cummings (Crownsville, Md.) had two goals and two assists.

Limestone held the edge in shots (40-26), ground balls (45-33) and face-offs (24 of 33). Saint freshman goalkeeper Patrick Sheridan (Fairport, N.Y.) earned the victory, playing 57 minutes between the pipes. He allowed eight goals and recorded 10 saves. Wingate junior goalkeeper Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) went the distance, posting nine saves.

Both teams return to conference play for their next games. Wingate visits Saint Leo Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Deep South Conference contest. Limestone is off until Wednesday, March 27, when the Saints visit Mount Olive for a 4:00 p.m. Conference Carolinas encounter.

WINGATE, N.C. Coming off a tough loss to Le Moyne this past Saturday, No. 3 Limestone (8-1, 2-0 CC) took out their frustrations on neighboring Wingate (2-9, 1-4 DSC), scoring 16 straight goals on their way to a 22-8 victory on Tuesday, March 19.

Senior attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) erupted for four goals and three assists to pace the Saints while senior attack Corey Rich (Sacramento, Calif.) had four scores and a pair of assists. Joining them on the offensive attack was junior attack Todd Nakasuji (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) who had four goals on just four shots.

Tewaaraton Award nominee senior midfielder Tor Reinholdt (Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada) notched two goals and had three assists to help fuel the offense and senior midfielder Zach Cummings (Crownsville, Md.) finished with two goals and two assists.

Senior face-off specialist Anthony Rodrigues (Lysterfield, Australia) won 14 of 18 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 11 groundballs and senior face-off specialist Jake Ternosky (LaFayette, N.Y.) went 8 of 12 at the center "X" and had nine groundballs. Freshman goal keeper Patrick Sheridan (Fairport, N.Y.) saw the lion's share of minutes in net, recording 57 while making 10 saves and allowing eight goals to collect the win.
