Presidents Fall Just Short to Undefeated Clarkson In Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Undefeated Clarkson scored four of the last five goals to hold off Washington & Jefferson 8-5 at the Spring Fling Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Lytal Park.

The Presidents (2-4) trailed 4-3 at halftime, but tied the match early in the second half on a free-position goal by senior midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley). Clarkson (4-0) answered with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart, but W&J responded with the first collegiate goal of freshman defender Danielle Cochrane's (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) career at the 12:09 mark to close to within 6-5. However, Clarkson scored twice in the final five minutes to seal the win.

"I am really pleased with the way our team played today," said first-year Head Coach Tracy Coyne. "We are moving in the right direction despite playing with a short bench. We received a number of nice individual performances."

Senior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored a pair of goals, while freshman midfielder Alex Dikos (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) also added the first of her career.

Senior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) had 13 saves for the Presidents, who were outshot by a 23-17 margin.

Katie VanDeValk led all scorers with four goals and one assist for Clarkson. Alyssa Cristaldi also netted a hat trick.

W&J concludes play in the Florida tournament Thursday versus Birmingham-Southern (5:00 pm).
