DePompeo Leads No. 18 Navy to Win at George Washington

The game became a defensive battle for the first 13 minutes of the second half and the first goal of the stanza came at 16:47 by George Washington's Nicole Lacey to cut the margin to one.

DePompeo responded three minutes later on an unassisted tally to give the Mids a two-goal cushion and then scored once again at 11:56 to extend Navy's lead to 9-6, which would be the final score.

Navy's defense buckled down in the final 30 minutes, allowing just one goal and sophomore goalie Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) made four saves in the second half. Navy entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense and held its eighth opponent to single-digit goals.

Foky finished the game with five saves, three ground balls and two caused turnovers to improve to 7-1 on the season. Senior defender Brijet Mall (Cumming, Ga.) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore midfielder Lindsay Rheiner (Wycombe, Pa.) added three draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Young became Navy's all-time leader in career starts with her 73rd on Wednesday. Senior Beth Young (Berywn, Pa.) started her 72nd career game to move into a tie for second place.

Vassallo led George Washington with three goals and Jamie Bumgardner had four points on one goal and three assists.

Navy outshot George Washington, 19-18, and held a 21-19 edge in ground balls. George Washington held a 9-8 edge in draw controls. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

Navy will look to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League play when the team hosts Lafayette (6-4, 0-1 PL) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m..
