No. 4 Middlebury Gets by RPI for Third Victory

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. Middlebury jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed, on its way to a 12-8 win over Rensselaer (3-1) on Kohn Field. The fourth-ranked Panthers (3-0) return to action on Saturday at Wesleyan, while the Engineers visit Castleton on Thursday.

Three different players scored for Middlebury to open the game before Rachel Scofield found the back of the net with a bouncing shot on a free position attempt. Margaret Souther scored cutting to the goal before Ellen Halle made a nice spin move to make it a 5-1 lead for the Panthers at the 12:33 mark.

Rensselaer came back strong, scoring four of the game's next five goals, including one in the second half, to make it a 6-5 game. Erin Riley set up a pair of goals, before Halle found Katie Ritter for a quick-stick tally to make it a 6-3 game. Alissa Peterson scored on a free position with 29 seconds left in the half, before doing the same 3:20 into the second half to make it a one-goal game.

Souther countered for the Panthers, scoring twice in 23 seconds to give her team an 8-5 lead with 23:02 remaining. Peterson scored her third straight goal for the Engineers, before Riley netted a free position shot to bring her team within one at 8-7.

Just 38 seconds later, Middlebury's Chrissy Ritter scored after picking up a loose ball to make it 9-7, before Laurel Pascal scored on a quick-stick after a nice feed from behind the net by Halle. K. Ritter and Halle converted free position goals to make it 12-7 before Riley scored the game's final goal for Rensselaer with 2:29 remaining.

Halle finished with three goals and three assists for Middlebury, Souther scored three times, while K. Ritter netted a pair. Alyssa Palomba made three saves in goal to earn the win.

Peterson scored two to pace Rensselaer, with two goals and two helpers from Riley. Allie Arnal finished the night with six saves in goal.
