Wooster Takes Down Washington & Jefferson, 15-4
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior attacker Shawn Handy (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) scored all four of his goals in the first half as Wooster eased past Washington & Jefferson, 15-4, in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The Fighting Scots (6-4) assumed a 2-0 lead during the first nine minutes behind goals from freshman attacker Mark Weschler (Silver Spring, Md./OLGC) and Handy, but the Presidents sliced the lead in half at the 5:02 mark on a goal by freshman attacker Sean Jasionowski (Bear, Del./Pennington).
Wooster then scored five unanswered goals over the final 17 minutes of the half to take a 7-1 lead after 30 minutes of play. Handy netted three goals during the stretch, while Weschler posted a goal and an assist.
W&J sophomores Russ Kalkstein (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) and Tim Huckestein (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) scored goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter to bring W&J to within 7-3, but the Fighting Scots fired in eight of the game's final nine goals to run away with the victory.
Weschler finished with two goals and three assists, while junior midfielder Ben Abbott (Yarmouth, Maine/Canterbury School) added two goals and one assist. Five different Fighting Scots had at least two goals.
Sophomore goalie Matt Biester (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) picked up the win after making nine saves in 52 minutes of action. W&J sophomore goalie Spooky Reid (Franklin, Tenn./University School of Nashville) managed six saves in 42 minutes, while allowing nine goals.
Wooster held a 36-22 shot advantage and gathered 48 ground balls. The Fighting Scots also converted on all three of their extra-man opportunities.
Washington & Jefferson (4-7) returns to action next Wednesday as it travels to Granville, Ohio, to take on Denison at 7:30 pm.
