Wesleyan Rolls on Offense, Sinking Maritime

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (March 20) - Wesleyan improved to 5-0 all-time vs. SUNY Maritime by scoring the game's opening five goals then adding the final 13 tallies in rolling to an 18-1 decision in here tonight.

Wesleyan, now 4-1 on the season, returns to action Sat., March 23 in a pivotal NESCAC match-up at Middlebury, ranked 14th nationally and second in New England. Wesleyan is ranked sixth in the region. Maritime (3-6) is back on the field Saturday as well, hosting SUNY Farmingdale in a Skyline Conference match-up.

Sophomore David Murphy assisted on three of Wesleyan first six goals and finished the game with five points on a goal and four assists. The Cardinals led, 6-1, after the first quarter and carried a 12-1 margin into halftime. It was 15-1 through three periods en route to the 18-1 final.

Sophomore Matt Prezioso and junior Remy Lieberman both had a hat trick for Wesleyan while sophomore Nate Ryan and freshman Greg Pietroforte both added a pair of markers. Wesleyan had eight other single goal scorers and collected 13 assists as a team. Junior Mike Giambanco chipped in with a goal and two helpers.

Maritime picked up its loan goal from top scorer freshman Tom Kelly, as he netted his 16th of the season, with 3:00 left in the first period. Senior Kevin Winter got the assist. Wesleyan junior goalie Mark Simmons played the bulk of the first half, picking up four saves.

Senior JD Dieterich played the final 32 minutes and also had four stops. Two Maritime keepers combined for 20 saves as Wesleyan generated a 58-17 margin in shots. Starter senior Nick Barbuto played 45 minutes and had 14 saves while freshman Mike Arnold made six saves during the fourth quarter.

Wesleyan had a 46-25 edge in ground balls, led by senior Mike Robinson with seven. Robinson also had a game-high four caused turnovers. The Cardinals enjoyed 14 faceoff wins to nine by the Privateers.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (March 20, 2013) Maritime lost to Wesleyan, 18-1, Wednesday night on the road at the Cardinals' Smith Field. The Privateers fall to 3-6 on the season, while the Cards improve to 4-1.

Freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) recorded the only goal for Maritime and it came in the opening quarter of play with Wesleyan ahead, 5-0. Senior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) got the assist on the tally. The Cardinals scored one more goal in the quarter to take a 6-1 lead into the short break.

Six more goals in the second quarter gave the Cards a 12-1 lead that they carried with them into the locker room at halftime. Three goals in both the third and fourth quarter ended the scoring in the game. The Privateers were outshot, 58-17, by Wesleyan, who is receiving votes in the national poll.

Maritime goalie Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded 14 saves in three quarters of action before being replaced by freshman Mike Arnold (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) in the fourth quarter, who made six stops. Winter picked up a team-high four groundballs for the Privateers.

For the Cardinals, sophomore David Murphy recorded a team-high five points on a goal and four assists. Sophomore Matt Prezioso and junior Remy Lieberman both recorded hat tricks and junior goalie Mark Simmons earned the win in net with four saves in just under one half of play. Senior JD Dieterich made four more saves in over a half.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when the squad will open up Skyline Conference action at Farmingdale State College. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
