Higgins Scores Five as Yeomen Fly by Redhawks

Wooster, Ohio Playing at John P. Papp Stadium on the campus of the College of Wooster due to unplayable conditions at Fred Shults Field was no problem for Oberlin College, as it cruised to a 15-8 win over La Roche College on Wednesday night.

Sophomore standout Sean Higgins paced the Yeomen attack with five goals to run his account to 19 on the season, already matching his total of all of last year in just six games. Rookie Peter Paul added a career-best four scores in the win.

While the temperature on the field was downright frigid it did matter to the Yeomen as they got off to a hot start by scoring six first-quarter goals, while out-shooting the Redhawks 24-0 in the period. Rookie Alex Wagman opened the scoring at the 11:23 mark with his seventh tally of the season. Classmate Nick Lobley would follow with his 13th goal of the year less than two minutes later. Thomas Cool, Paul and Higgins (2) would also all score in the session.

The Redhawks would breakthrough by scoring the first goal of the second period, but the Yeomen would answer with five straight goals before La Roche tacked on one more before the first half would end. Higgins' man-up goal at 9:55 made it an 8-1 Yeomen lead and Mickey Fiorillo's lone score of the game at the 6:54 mark put Oberlin into double digits.

After taking an 11-2 lead into the locker room at the intermission, Oberlin let its foot off the gas slightly in the second half as the Redhawks out-shot the Yeomen 34-15 and out-scored them 6-4 to over the final 30 minutes. However, the eventual outcome was never in doubt.

Miles Brooke played the first three quarters in goal and made nine saves before giving way to Josh Kasten who turned away seven shots in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Brian Schupack led the defense with seven caused turnovers, while Kirby Livingston added six ground balls.

Oberlin finished 23 of 27 on clear attempts and had a slight 52-51 edge in ground balls.

The Yeomen begin conference play on Saturday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan for a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
