Yellow Jackets Come Up Just Short at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio Defiance traveled to Wilmington on a cold March evening to take on the Quakers in a non-conference match-up of first-year programs. The home side managed to escape the contest with a close 9-7 win over DC.

The Quakers struck first to get the game going and grab an early one-goal lead, but the Jackets fought back and leveled the score at the end of the first, as Chase Mallory scored his second goal of the season with one minute remaining in the period.

The Purple and Gold got outscored 3-2 in the second stanza to take a one-goal deficit at 4-3 into halftime. The freshmen attacking duo of Jesse Bailey and James Lopez each found the back of the net for the Jackets in the second.

Wilmington got on the scoreboard first in the second-half, before Defiance fought back and registered two-straight goals to tie the score for the third time in the game at 5-5. Bailey and Dylan Textor, the Jackets' top-two goal scorers, were responsible for the DC goals.

Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, the Quakers scored three-consecutive goals after Defiance fought back to tie the game to take a commanding 8-5 lead.

The Yellow Jackets were able to tally two of the game's last three goals to finish the game, but it would not be enough, as DC lost by a final of 9-7.

The seven Defiance College goals marks the highest offensive output of the season for the team. A notable individual performance for the Purple and Gold was turned in by freshman Jesse Bailey, who notched his second hat-trick of the season.

With the defeat, the Jackets fall to 0-6 on the season. The squad hosts its inaugural Midwest Lacrosse Conference game against Aurora on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Justin F. Coressel Stadium.
