Purple Knights Drop Home Opener to Penmen

COLCHESTER, Vt. - In its 2013 home opener, Saint Michael's fell to Northeast-10 Conference co-leader Southern New Hampshire, 14-8, during league action on Thursday at Duffy Field. The are now 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen improved to 4-3 and 3-0.

Sophomore Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) notched a hat trick and an assist for the hosts, while junior Shannon Murphy (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional/UMass) had a goal and two helpers. Classmate Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy) turned in a goal and an assist, and juniors Crystal King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and Claire Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) also scored.

First-year Casey Curtin (Waltham, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made three stops, while sophomore Taylor Midgley (Hampton, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) posted seven ground balls and three caused turnovers from her spot on defense. Junior Nicole Buckley (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Junior Ellie Morin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) scored five goals on five shots for Southern New Hampshire while adding four ground balls and four draw controls. Sophomore Lindsay Bucknam (Bow, N.H./Bow) scored four times, and first-year Alexa Allen (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) had three goals, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Classmate Maria Ploof (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury Union) made 11 saves.

The Purple Knights burst out to a 4-1 lead 8:14 into the contest thanks to two goals and an assist from Boyer, and a goal and a helper from Murphy. However, after Murphy's marker gave the hosts the three-goal edge, the Penmen went on a 6-1 run, with Allen, Bucknam and Morin each scoring twice. Martin brought Saint Michael's within 7-6 with 3:23 left in the opening half off of a Casper dish, but the Penmen's high-scoring trio combined for the next five goals, producing a 12-6 margin with 13:27 remaining in the contest. Each team scored twice in the final 8:31.

The Purple Knights hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
