Geremia Sets Record as No. 3 Cortland Runs by St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. Freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) scored a game-high nine points and set a single-game school record with eight assists to lead third-ranked Cortland to a 15-5 win at St. Lawrence Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. Geremia eclipsed the old mark of seven assists set by Beth Breen in a home game versus Clarkson in 1986.

Nine players in all found the back of the net in the game for the Red Dragons (5-1). Sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) led the team with three scores. Junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) had two goals and one assist.

Senior Taylor Harney (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford), sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) each tallied two goals. Geremia, senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa), junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) chipped in with one goal apiece.

Freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) earned her first career start in goal for Cortland, turning aside 12 shots, including eight in the first half. Junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) registered a game-high five caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. Monaghan led the Red Dragons with four draw controls.

Brigid Hurley paced St. Lawrence (3-2) with two goals, while Joey Kelley, Michaela Maybee and Holly Noyes each netted one goal and Hannah Calvelli contributed one assist. Goalie Adden Cunningham stopped eight shots and recorded four ground balls. Regina Rogers caused four turnovers, Noyes collected a game-high seven draw controls and added four ground balls.

The Red Dragons notched the first six goals of the game with Beville and Hayes-Hurley each scoring twice. Noyes broke the string at the four minute, 48 second mark of the first half before Monaghan finished the first-half scoring at 1:15 and Cortland owned a comfortable 7-1 lead at the half.

Hurley and Kelley sandwiched goals around scores from Campese and Robinson to open the second half and Cortland led 9-3 with 23:19 remaining. The Red Dragons scored the next five goals to seal the win with Geremia registering three assists, the last of which broke the school record at the 13:58 mark on Harney's first goal.

Hurley ended the streak with her second of the game at 13:08, Harney followed with her second at 9:04 and Maybee completed the scoring with a free-position goal at 6:47.
