No. 14 Mercyhurst Handles Tiffin

ERIE, Pa.- No. 14 Mercyhurst beat Tiffin, 14-5, Friday afternoon. Rebecca Himes and Regan Kaestner each had three goals and an assist in the non-conference win at a cold Tullio Field.

The game started out slow offensively, with neither side scoring in the first six minutes. Himes found the back of the net with 23:10 remaining in the half, as Emily Gebhardt assisted. Tiffin answered with the tying goal a few minutes later. Anna LeGrett hit Kaestner for a goal at the 15:28 mark and then LeGrett finished a free position shot 49 seconds later for a 3-1 advantage.

Alexandria Quast, the nation's leading scorer each of the past two seasons, scored twice in under two minutes to even the contest at three. Late in the first period, Alisha Catalino assisted on a Taylor Santiago goal and then Catalino scored herself with 4:02 to play. Gebhardt found Erin Byrnes for another score 29 seconds after, giving the Lakers a 6-3 lead going into halftime.

Hannah Corton got Mercyhurst rolling early in the second half. She scored 55 seconds in and followed with a goal 58 seconds later to stretch the lead. LeGrett assisted on a Catalino goal a few minutes later as the hosts pulled away. Kaestner finished a Himes pass to make it 10-3 with 24:55 to play.

The Dragons scored, but Himes responded with a score just 41 seconds later. Kayla Minner hit Kaestner for another goal at the 18:05 mark. With under 13 minutes left, Himes scored from Kaestner for a 13-4 margin. Byrnes finished the Lakers' scoring with 5:28 to go.

Himes and Kaestner each totaled four points. Catalino had two goals and two assists, while LeGrett had a goal and two assists. Corton and Byrnes each scored twice. Rebecca Muscella made three saves in goal. Quast paced Tiffin with three goals and an assist.

Mercyhurst outshot Tiffin, 48-10, and took 17-21 draw controls. Dragon goalie Jessica Bombard stood tall, recording 21 saves in net.

The Lakers host Slippery Rock in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener on Tuesday, March 26. The contest is set for a 4:00 p.m. start at Tullio Field.
