Tavella Guides Nor'easters to Victory over Warriors

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored six times on eight shots to power the University of New England to a 15-9 non-conference victory over Eastern Connecticut on Friday afternoon (Mar. 22) at the Mansfield Complex.

The triumph is the first of the season for Big Blue (1-4), while the Warriors drop to 2-3 overall.

Tavella's effort -- one goal shy of a career-high -- advanced her one spot on both the all-time goals and points lists in UNE history. Her second goal of the contest was enough to pass Danielle Cate '11 (119 goals) for second place, and Tavella's fifth goal was point number 150, to move ahead of Ruth Ness '05 for third place in that category.

Sophomore Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) added two goals and five assists. In just 21 career games, Newsome now shares third place in the program records with 44 helpers.

UNE sophomore Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine) contributed three scores to the winning cause. Junior Johanna Currier (Holderness, N.H.) had a game-high five ground balls and controlled three draws. As the Nor'easters were out-shot in the game, 33-27, first-year goalie Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) turned in a 16-save performance to help secure the decision.

Alexa Foldy tallied a team-high three goals for Eastern Connecticut. Erin Conn had a game-high nine draw controls for the Warriors, who finished with a sizeable 19-7 edge in the contest. Goalie Hannah Heslin made five stops between the pipes.

Big Blue never trailed in the match. Leading 3-2 early in the 1st half, UNE struck for the next four goals to go up by five (7-2). Tavella netted three of those scores.

The cushion held for over nine minutes until late in the frame, when Foldy reduced the deficit to four before the break.

Newsome and Tavella recorded the first two markers of the 2nd period to bump the difference to six (9-3). The Nor'easters' advantage was trimmed to four on three separate occasions during the final stanza, but ECSU could not get any closer.

UNE returns home for a non-league date with Husson on Monday (4:00 p.m.).
