Purple Eagle Winning Streak Stopped at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. Niagara saw their three-game winning streak cut short by the Duquesne Dukes with a 22-4 defeat on Friday evening.

Maria Battista led the Purple Eagles (3-6) with two goals, while Danielle Maio and Courtney Pierce each added a score. Caroline Grosso and Carrie-Jo Farrugia contributed an assist each on the game.

"The effort was there today," head coach Wendy Stone said. "We worked hard, but not smart. We made too many mistakes and could not recover from Duquesne's early momentum. We will look to be better next time out."

Niagara would be the first to get on the board as Maio scored her 12th goal of the season less than three minutes into the contest. The Dukes would respond with nine straight goals, led by Haley Marafioti, Amanda Kidder and Clare Hurley with a pair of goals each.

Battisa netted the next two scores to make it a 9-3 contest with 12:37 remaining in the half. The goals were her team-leading 14th and 15th goal of the season. Duquesne wrapped up the opening 30 minutes with a 5-1 run though to put the them ahead 14-4.

Duquesne continued to dominate in the second period of play, scoring the remaining eight goals of the contest for the victory, and limiting NU to only three looks on net.

NU goaltender Paige Sasser finished the game with 12 saves.

The Purple Eagles wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sunday when Niagara hosts Delaware State at 1:00 p.m.
