HOYAS AND TERPS OPEN 2005 LAX SEASON
The #4 and #5 lacrosse programs in the nation open up against each other today in College Park. This is the second consecutive season that the Hoyas and Terps have begun the year and last season's contest dinged the Hoyas with a 14-5 loss at home. It was the first opening game loss for Head Coach Dave Urick since 1995. Urick and Hoyas are 13-2 all-time in season openers but Georgetown has never beaten Maryland in three attempts. The last time the Hoyas paid a visit to College Park was in 2003 and GU lost a penalty filled contest 9-5 late in the season.
Georgetown boasts four Preseason All-Americans, including First Team members Brodie Merrill at LSM and Andy Corno as a face-off specialist. Seven starters return to a team that was seconds away from holding off eventual national champion Syracuse in last season's NCAA Quarterfinals.
The defense is loaded with four of five starters returning, Merrill, Reyn Garnett (close defense), John Trapp (close defense) and Rich D'Andrea (goalie) all returning. So with the defense solidified it will be the offensive side of the ball that needs to step up. The midfield has seasoned returnees Nick Miaritis, Garrett Wilson, Brice Queener and Pete Cannon to rely upon but the attack is young. Junior Sean Denihan will lead GU's attacking corps and will be joined by last season's third leading goal scorer and ECAC Rookie of the Year sophomore Trevor Casey.
The third attack slot will be filled by any number of players including junior Kyle Morin or freshmen Matt McBride and Brendan Cannon. Maryland's scoring options return completely intact for 2005 as all four top scorers from a season ago return. Joe Walters leads the Terps offense after netting 46 goals last season and adding 22 assists. Unlike the Hoyas the Terps defense is the question mark as every starting defender from last season has moved on.
You Should Know...
The Hoyas are one of only four programs in the nation to have gone to the past eight NCAA Tournaments. GU is joined by Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Princeton in this elite group.
You Should Also Know...
Senior Andy Corno already owns all of Georgetown's career records in face-offs. He owns the most wins (462), the most attempts (709) and the highest win % (.652). Corno also is GU's all-time best groundball collector (255).
