Spartans Ride Late Rally to Victory over Hawks

Castleton, Vt. - Castleton ended the game on a 5-0 run in the final seven minutes to topple Roger Williams 17-15, earning their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Amanda Flodstrom led the way with eight points for the Spartans, notching six goals and two assists. Deven Machette led the Hawks with five goals while Kristen Pingree notched four goals and an assist.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead with four unanswered goals to begin the game. Amanda Flodstrom notched her first goal just 49 seconds into the game. She followed with a second score five minutes later to put the Spartans up 2-0. Brandi Whittemore and Kate Auer each followed with scores to give the Spartans a four-goal lead.

After a Roger Williams score, Whittemore notched her second goal of the game with 14:49 remaining in the first. With the Spartans up 5-1, the Hawks dug deep to go on a run of their own. Kristen Pingree keyed a Roger Williams rally that tied the game. Pingree scored three consecutive goals as part of a 4-0 run for the Hawks.

Flodstrom notched two more goals in the first half, scoring her 100th career goal with 3:46 remaining in the half. Mariah Lesure would add a goal for the Spartans who went into the half tied 8-8 with the Hawks.

In the second half, the Hawks came out firing, taking a three goal lead in the first 6:30 of the second half. Jennilee Mark scored a goal to get the Spartans started in the second half, cutting the Roger Williams lead to 11-9 with 23:05 remaining.

Castleton let up two more goals to fall behind 13-9 before Kate Auer keyed a 3-0 run. Auer scored with 19:15 remaining. After Blake Wardwell followed up with a goal, Auer tallied another goal with 14:48 left to cut the Spartans deficit to just one.

The Hawks extended their lead with back-to-back goals from Danielle Neagle and Jessica Searl to put the visiting squad up 15-12 with 7:25 remaining in the game.

With the squad down three, Castleton dug deep to start a rally. Flodstrom scored her fifth goal of the game with 6:19 remaining, and after a tally by Jennilee Mark, scored again with 4:27 remaining to tie the score at 15-15. Sarah Clark got on the board with 3:19 left, scoring on a free position shot to put the Spartans up 16-15. Jessica Taplin added an insurance goal with 2:42 remaining to help the home team ice the game.

Meghan Els earned the first win of her career in goal for the Spartans, turning away 10 shots from the Hawks. Justine Sullivan stopped 14 shots in the loss.

Castleton improves to 1-5 with the victory and will take on Pymouth St. on Wednesday, Mar. 28 at Spartan Stadium.
