Mount St. Vincent Edges SUNYIT

Yonkers, N.Y. Junior John Petito (Staten Island, N.Y.) led four College of Mount Saint Vincent players with at least two points on Saturday with five, as they scored a second straight win with a 10-8 triumph over visiting SUNYIT.

After falling behind 2-0 on goals from SUNYIT's Kevin Gardrvits, the Dolphins ripped off the final four goals of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes. Petito scored a goal over the run and assisted on two Mike McEnaney (New York, N.Y.) tallies to push the Dolphins in front for good in the game.

The Dolphins opened a five goal advantage heading into halftime on Saturday with the only three markers of the second stanza. Miller Celestin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) and Josh James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all tallied in the final 4:12 of the second quarter to extend the lead.

SUNYIT would control the play in the third quarter and outscored Mount Saint Vincent 4-1 to climb back to within 8-6 heading into the final period. The Wildcats scored a pair of man-up goals in the quarter, with Gardrvits scoring two more times. Brett Gifford added a goal and an assist for the visitors in the third.

The two teams split four goals in the fourth, with Mount Saint Vincent striking with the first two to build its lead back to 10-6. Pappas scored in the first minute and a half of the quarter to get the lead to three and Petito scored his second man-up goal of the day at the 2:39 mark to give the Dolphins a four goal cushion.

The visiting Wildcats would not go quietly in the game and managed two goals in the final 2:09 of the regulation to get back to the final two goal decision. Tyler Serva scored both goals for SUNYIT.

Petito finished the day with two goals and three assists for the Dolphins and is now the team leader in helpers with eight and in points with 18. He also contributed four groundballs to the winning effort.

McEnaney continued his strong rookie season with two more goals and is second on the team with 11 markers. He finished the day with two groundballs. Pappas sits atop the team leaders in goals with 12 after scoring two more on Saturday and finished with five groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Frank Maddaloni (Bronx, N.Y.) rounded out the game with an assist to go along with three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) added a helper and three groundballs.

Junior Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal with eight saves and also led the Mount with seven groundballs. Kalibat added a goal and an assist for the Dolphins in man-up situations. Jeffrey Melnik suffered the loss for SUNYIT, making 18 stops and picking up two groundballs.

Mount Saint Vincent finished the game outshooting SUNYIT 52-28, including 30-5 in the first half. The Dolphins also won the groundball duel 37-28 and won 11 of the 21 face-offs taken. Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won all 11 for the Mount and picked up two groundballs. The Dolphins closed the game a perfect 3 for 3 in man-up situations.

Saturday's victory pushes Mount Saint Vincent above the .500 mark overall at 4-3. The Dolphins will open Skyline Conference play on March 27 when they travel to Montclair State. Face-off with the Red Hawks is set for 7:00 p.m.
