Siena Earns Close Win at Big East Foe Providence

After suffering four straight razor thin defeats, Siena got back on track in a big way Saturday. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Danny Martinsen tallied five points and Matt Sharp made 14 saves as the Saints earned a 13-11 win at Big East foe Providence, which entered the day receiving votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll.

Siena (2-6), which had lost four in a row by a total of just five goals, won its sixth straight over its former MAAC rival after Providence (5-3) had won 21 of the first 23 in the all-time series.

Martinsen and Colin Clive got the Saints on the board with back-to-back tallies in the final 98 seconds of the first quarter, giving Siena a 2-1 lead. The Friars would rally to within a goal five more times during the game, but the Saints never relinquished the lead.

Daniel Textor scored his second straight goal for Providence to get the Friars back within a goal once final time at 10-9 with 10:58 remaining in the game before the Saints delivered the knockout punch. Clive put the Saints back up two moments later and Thomas Schoener scored the eventual game-winner with 8:02 remaining to push the lead back to a three-goal margin.

Martinsen, who had struggled out of the gate with just 10 points in his first six games, had his best performance of the year in tallying a hat trick and adding two assists. Clive added a hat trick and finished with four points as did Conor Prunty.

Casey Dowd won 15-27 faceoffs, picked up nine groundballs and scored a key second half goal, while Mike Generi joined Sharp as a defensive star causing a career-high four turnovers.

Andrew Barton led Providence with five points including a hat trick, while JT Weber and Sean Wright contributed a pair of goals for the Friars which have now lost three in a row after opening the season 5-0.

Siena faces a major test Tuesday when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff at Cornell. The Big Red are 7-1 on the season and are currently ranked second nationally in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
