Shepherd Races Past Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Senior midfielder Krista Tippett (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) had five goals and an assist and sophomore attacker Georgia Karr (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) added a goal and a game-high six assists to lead Shepherd to a 20-7 win over Kutztown in action at Ram Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore attacker/midfielder Kelsey Eagan (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) added four goals and a pair of assists.

Senior midfielder Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) recorded three goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Erin Phelan (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) also tallied three goals for the Rams.

Junior attacker Hanna Wharton (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) had two goals, while junior midfielder Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, MD/Westminster) and freshman midfielder Theresa Lang (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding) each had one.

Freshman attacker Hunter Morris (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) had three assists and junior midfielder Christina Ferrara (California, MD/Leonardtown) added one.

Jillian Spencer had three goals and Gina Carmina added two for the Golden Bears.

Sophomore netminder Lily Schmulowitz (Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) recorded six saves for the Rams, while JoAnn McLaughlin recorded three saves for Kutztown.

The Rams held a 27-18 advantage in shots and a 30-26 edge in ground balls. Shepherd had a 16-13 edge in draw controls.

Shepherd improves to 7-3, while Kutztown falls to 1-2. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Notes: Karr tied a Shepherd single game record with her six assists. She shares the mark with Christina Ferrara (vs. IUP, 3-31-11) and Carly Jones (vs. Lees-McRae, 4-7-11).

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. -- Kutztown fell to Shepherd Saturday, 20-7. The Golden Bears (1-2) were led by Jillian Spencer (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) who scored three goals, recorded six ground balls, and had five caused turnovers. Gina Carmina (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) notched two goals and four ground balls.

Rosa Buffolino (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp) and Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) added a goal apiece as well for Kutztown.

Shepherd (7-3) opened the game to score in the first minute of play, and again within the first three minutes of action.

With an assist from Katie Feairheller (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), Beodeker scored the first goal for KU from a shot in the circle with 26:03 remaining in the first half.

The Rams went on to score six more unanswered goals, until Carmina scored the second goal for KU with an assist from Buffolino with 6:04 left in the first half. SU scored three more goals in the remaining minutes to take the lead 11-2 at halftime.

The Ram's additional two goals in the beginning of the second half were answered by a goal scored by Carmina with an assist by Cara Lord (Media, PA/Penn Crest). Spencer then scored three consecutive goals to bring the score to 13-6.

Goals were exchanged back and forth between the Golden Bears and the Rams including Buffolino's goal from a free position shot with 9:38 remaining to take the score to 14-7. However, the Rams held the advantage through the end of the second half with six unanswered goals to win the game 20-7.

KU goalkeeper JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) made three saves, and Shepherd out shot KU 27-18.

The Golden Bears return to action for their home opener and three straight home games. KU will host East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday, March 26 at Keystone Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
