Hartwick Hammers Houghton for Second Victory

ONEONTA, NY Sophomore Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led Hartwick with career-highs of five goals, three assists, and eight points in a 20-8 victory over visiting Houghton on Saturday at Wright Stadium. Ten Hawks recorded points on the day with seven players scoring two or more goals. The victory ups 'Wick's record to 2-3 on the season. The Highlanders fall to 0-5.

Jweid would have a hand in six goals in the first half alone as she tallied three times and dished out three assists. She would also end the game matching a career-high with seven draw controls.

Junior Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) contributed two goals and two assists for the Hawks. Freshman Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) notched three goals and senior Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), sophomores Jackie Moynihan (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown), and freshman Selena Dardia (Freeville, NY/Dryden) scored two apiece. Ally Naja (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) dished out two assists.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage as Luce, Ference and Littleton each found the net in the first 1:25 of the game. Houghton would score its first of the game at 25:29 and both teams would trade goals for the next eight minutes. The Highlanders closed the gap to just two goals on three occasions in the span.

Maesa Phongsamouth scored on a free-position shot with 17:41 left in the opening half to make the score 6-4, but Jweid answered 51 seconds later, triggering a seven-goal run for the Hawks over the next 9:13. Moynihan and Ference combined for four of the goals. Junior Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) added her first goal in a Hartwick uniform and O'Shea also scored to put Hartwick ahead by nine, 13-4.

Tyler Reese ended the Hartwick rally with a goal with 4:20 left in the half. Littleton added her second of the day with 2:22 to go as the Hawks led 14-5 at halftime.

Jweid tacked on two more in the opening 8:20 of the second half with Luce also scoring at 22:54 and the Hawks led by a comfortable 17-5 margin. Ten would be as close as the Highlanders would get as they scored at 17:13 and 14:43 to make it a 17-7 game, but Dardia found the net twice and defender Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) added her first career goal to push 'Wick's goal total to 20. The Highlanders tallied with under three minutes remaining for the day's final goal.

Hartwick held a 41-19 edge in shots in the game. The Hawks also won 21 of 30 draws and had a 31-19 edge in ground balls.

Moynihan registered five ground balls which was the game-high. Ference added four for the Hawks. O'Shea grabbed five draw controls to go along with Jweid's seven. Naja added three.

Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and April Hargy (Edgartown, MA/Martha's Vineyard) split time in cage for Hartwick. Luce made five saves in the first half. Hargy, who was seeing her first minutes in goal this season, stopped two in the second half.

Phongsamouth, Reese, and Nicole Mason each scored two to pace Houghton. Mason and Amanda Zacchigna each recorded three draws. Zacchigna also had a team-best four ground balls.

Hartwick travels to Cazenovia tomorrow in a makeup game rescheduled from Wednesday. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
