Dominican Drops ECC Opener to No. 10 Molloy

Hillburn, N.Y. (3/23/13) - Dominican fell in their East Coast Conference (ECC) debut of the 2013 season to the Lions of Molloy, 13-5, this afternoon in a game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex. With the loss DC falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Lions improve to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECC.

Molloy scored first with 11:47 remaining in the first quarter, but the Chargers struck back on a man-up opportunity as junior midfielder Thomas Dertinger (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored his eighth goal of the season off the assist from midfielder Sean McGregor (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) to tie the game with 8:09 left in the first.

Almost three minutes later, MC regained a one goal advantage, but DC answered back again as McGregor netted his first goal of the season to re-tie the score at 2-2 with 5:53 to go in the first.

From there, the scoring belonged to Molloy as they went on an 11-0 run, spanning from 5:53 left in the first quarter to just under four minutes left in the fourth, to go ahead 13-2. Junior Daniel Steigert (Copiague, N.Y.) broke the run with his fourth goal of the season off the pass from Jusstin Ruffin (Amityville, N.Y.), his fourth assist of the year.

Nicholas Capano (Troy, N.Y.) made the score 13-4 with 1:13 to play on the man-up opportunity and Dertinger closed out the scoring with his second game goal off the pass from Joseph Ravenell (Copiague, N.Y.), his fourth on the year with 35 ticks left on the clock for the final 13-5 score.

Matthew Quinones (Nanuet, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the first thirty minutes of action, while Andrew Slater (Brookfield, Conn.) had 10 saves in the last thirty minutes.

Dertinger had two points on the day with two goals, while McGregor finished with one goal and one assist for two points.

The Chargers are back in action on March 30th as they travel to California and take on Dominican University.
