Second Quarter Lifts Saint Leo to DSC Victory over Wingate

Saint Leo, Fla.---Deep South Conference-leading Saint Leo outscored Wingate 7-0 in the second quarter as the Lions claimed a 13-7 league victory over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at the Turf Stadium.

Sophomore attack Chris Caiazza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led Saint Leo (7-2 overall, 5-1 DSC) with four goals. Senior midfield Chase Clifton (Lexington, N.C.) and senior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led Wingate (2-10 overall, 1-5 DSC) with three goals and three assists, respectively.

SLU junior attack men Matt Obermeyer (Winter Springs, Fla.) and Robert Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) both contributed a hat trick for the hosts. Lion junior midfield Ryan Burke (Virginia Beach, Va.) had one goal and two assists.

Watts, senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.), senior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) scored one goal each for the visiting Bulldogs. Vogrig added an assist to his statistical ledger Saturday.

The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the first 15 minutes. Wingate struck first, as Watts scored on a feed from Vogrig to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the 10:30 mark. Saint Leo answered, as Caiazza scored on an assist from senior attack George Proechel (Orlando, Fla.) three minutes later.

The Lions exploded in the second quarter, as six different players contributed seven goals to an 8-1 halftime lead. Obermeyer was the only SLU player to score twice in the frame, as he started the 7-0 run at the 11:47 plateau. Sophomore midfield Kevin Hutchinson (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) had two assists in the second stanza. Freshman attack Matt Weller (Rosemount, Minn.) ended the flurry with an unassisted tally at the 2:26 mark.

Wingate outscored Saint Leo 4-1 in the third quarter. Clifton scored twice in the frame, helping the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 8-5. Womble scored on an assist from Watts with exactly eight minutes left in the quarter, making the score 8-5 Saint Leo. Caiazza ended the Lions' drought on an assist from Burke (5:31) to give the hosts a four-goal lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Caiazza goal started a 4-0 push for the hosts, as the Lions scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter for a 12-5 advantage on another Caiazza tally (10:24). Kendall answered with a goal at the 5:50 mark. Robert Hutchinson and Clifton traded goals to settle the final margin.

Saint Leo freshman goalkeeper Dave Moore (Lake Mary, Fla.) collected his seventh win of the season, collecting 10 saves and allowing seven goals. Moore played 60 minutes. Two Wingate goalkeepers saw time Saturday. Redshirt junior Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) made five saves and gave up seven goals in 24-plus minutes. Sophomore Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) finished for the Bulldogs. He had six saves and six goals allowed.

The Lions led the shot count 41-30 and won the ground ball battle 27-22. Saint Leo won 15 of 23 face-offs. SLU freshman midfield Will Cothron (Ocala, Fla.) earned 10 face-off victories (in 14 attempts). Wingate junior midfield Alex Despo (Waxhaw, N.C.) won eight face-offs for the Bulldogs.

Both teams play non-conference games next. Wingate hosts Mars Hill Saturday for Senior Day. First face-off at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field is slated for 2:00 p.m. Saint Leo makes the journey to New York, visiting New York Institute of Technology Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. encounter.
