Spartans Cruise to Win vs. Johnson State in NAC Opener

Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans used a 10-goal first quarter to roll past the Johnson St. Badgers by a score of 18-2 on Saturday, Mar. 23 at Spartan Stadium.

Zach Davidson led the way for the Spartans, tallying four goals and four assists, while Phil Patterson notched two goals and dished off an assist. Colin Murray notched two goals as well. Castleton won 15 of 21 face-offs with Ben Roberts winning nine and Zach Devoid winning five.

On defense, the Spartans outworked the Badgers, scooping 73 ground balls as opposed to Johnson's 27. Roberts led the way, scooping eight ground balls, while Devoid earned six. Alex Noonan, Nick Neugebauer, and Ryan Cave each notched a team-high two caused turnovers. Eric Horsfield made two saves for the Spartans and earned the win in net.

Nohea King started the scoring just 32 seconds into the game, notching his fifth goal of the season. The Spartans would follow with nine more goals in the frame, including goals from Alex Green and Phil Patterson within 26 seconds of each other in the final minute of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Alex Denny rifled a shot off a pass from Zach Davidson to make the score 11-0. King and Davidson followed suit, scoring at the 2:09 mark and the 3:33 mark, respectively. Paul Saulsbury capped the quarter's scoring with 3:34 remaining in the half. The Spartans went into the break with a 14-0 lead.

In the second half, Johnson St. got on the board with a goal 2:12 into the third frame. The Spartans responded with a goal from Alex Brands five minutes later to make the score 15-1. The fourth quarter began with three consecutive goals by the Spartans, two from Murray and one from Taylor Swarter. With 20 seconds remaining, Johnson St. converted on a goal from Matt Dekens, making the final score 18-2.

Zach Jerome made 26 saves for the Badgers in the losing effort and Ryan Belen led the squad with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Castleton improves to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Spartans will host Hartwick on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
