Mount Saint Vincent Upended at Ramapo

Mahwah, N.Y. Mount Saint Vincent had three players score two goals on Saturday, but the Dolphins could not hold off Ramapo in a 10-8 Skyline Conference loss. Nicole Flores (Bethpage, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with three points in the game.

Mount Saint Vincent opened the game in strong fashion and took a three goal lead into halftime after scoring six of the first nine goals of the game. Flores opened the scoring for the Dolphins, before Ramapo received back-to-back goals from Lauren Schmidt and Lindsay Hughes to take a 2-1 lead.

The Dolphins rebounded to net the next three goals to pull in front 4-2 with 6:24 left in the first half. Katie Coyle (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) opened the scoring spurt at the 15:34 mark and Flores and Samantha Ramsden (Warren, R.I.) added goals to build the lead.

Hughes scored her second of the half to break the string by the Dolphins, but Sarah Colletti (Mansfield, Mass.) and Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each scored in the final 4:30 of the first period to give the Mount a 6-3 advantage after 30 minutes of play.

Coming out of the intermission, Ramapo got the first two goals of the second half from Teresa Gustafson and Hughes inside the first 10 minutes to get back to within a goal with 21:19 left in regulation time.

Mount Saint Vincent spread the lead back out to three goals with consecutive markers from Ramsden and Carr to get the Dolphins in front 8-5 with just over 15 minutes left in the second period.

Carr's goal at the 15:36 mark of the second half would be the Mount's final tally of the day and Ramapo went on to score the last five goals of the afternoon. Schmidt, Taylor Jade Nicholas and Lacey Gruendling all scored just under four minutes apart to knot the score at 8-8 for the Roadrunners and Hughes scored twice in the final 6:13 of regulation to get Ramapo in front for good in the game.

Hughes closed the game with seven points for Ramapo after potting five goals and helping on two others. She also one nine draw controls on the day and caused two turnovers for Ramapo.

Schmidt was the only other Ramapo player with more then one goal after scoring twice in the game. She also caused three turnovers in the win. Amanda Ferry rounded out the day with four draw controls and an assist.

Flores added an assist to her two goals in the game and now leads the team with seven assists and is tied for tops on the squad with 20 points. Flores added a team-high three draw controls on Saturday. Carr and Ramsden each added two goals for the Mount, with Ramsden causing four turnovers and winning two draw controls.

Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with eight saves in goal and picked up a groundball. Reagan Vier picked up the win for Ramapo with 11 saves and also added three groundballs.

Mount Saint Vincent outshot Ramapo in the game 26-20, with Ramapo holding a 15-9 edge in groundballs. Ramapo dominated draw controls on the afternoon, winning 14 of the 20 taken.

Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-4 overall on the season and to 1-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to league rival Farmingdale St. on March 27. Opening Draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
