Freshmen Lead Cabrini by Notre Dame for First Win

BALTIMORE, Md. After opening the season with five consecutive losses, Cabrini finally found its winning touch. The Cavaliers hit the road and returned with an 18-6 win at Notre Dame (Md.). The victory was also the Blue and White's first in its 2013 CSAC slate.

Freshmen Nathalie Basunga and Katie Lasater led the way with a combined 13 points in the win. Basunga totaled seven points on four goals and three assists, while Lasater found the net six times. Sophomore Lacie Doubet chipped in with five points on a goal and helpers, while senior Christina Pasquariello matched Doubet with five points, recording three goals and a pair of assists.

The Cavaliers grabbed control of the scoreboard in the opening minutes as Doubet found the net before Lasater scored her first two goals of the day, giving the Blue and White a 3-0 lead in less than four minutes of play. The Gators scored their first of the day before Pasquariello scored three consecutive goals in a span of less than two minutes. Lasater tallied her third helping the Cavaliers had built a 7-1 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.

Notre Dame (Md.) tallied a pair of goals before Cabrini blew the game open with seven unanswered goals scored by three Cavaliers in the final 15:42 of the first half. Basunga tallied a hat trick in a span of just five minutes, while Lasater and sophomore Melissa Scanzano scored two goals each, extending the lead to 14-3 at the half.

The Gators opened the second half with a pair of goals before sophomore Karlie Gruccio scored her first career goal. Basunga and Lasater closed their career days before fellow rookie Caitlyn Poole four the net for her first career point on a goal with 6:13 to play.

Basunga also led the club with seven draw controls and shared team-high honors with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Doubet also secured five ground balls, while junior Bree Thompson and freshman Maura O'Connell also forced two turnovers. Junior Janel Folkomer recorded seven saves between the Blue and White pipes in the win.

Katie Johnson and Terri Allen scored two goals each for the Gators (2-3, 0-2 CSAC). Kelsey Kempf scooped six ground balls and forces five Cabrini miscues.

The Cavaliers will return to Edith Robb Dixon Field on Tuesday when they host Cedar Crest College (0-5, 0-1 CSAC) in CSAC action. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
