Seahawks Fall at No. 10 York

York, Pa. First-year midfielder Tori Poffenberger (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) scored twice as St. Mary's opened the Capital Athletic Conference season with a 14-5 loss at No. 10 York Saturday afternoon.

Poffenberger led the attack for the Seahawks (3-6, 0-1 CAC) with her two goals while attackers Emily Shafer (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Taylor Sartor (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and first-year midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) each picked up a goal.

York (7-1, 1-0 CAC) opened up the game with three straight goals before Sartor stopped the Spartans' run with an unassisted goal at 27:16. YCP then ripped seven in a row to post a 10-1 advantage at 5:54. Shafer put up a second one on the board for St. Mary's as she converted a free position shot. York headed into halftime with an 11-2 lead following senior attacker Kim Wayson's (Harwood, Md.) fourth goal of the afternoon.

Wayson paced all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist while sophomore midfielder Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md.) added a hat trick and junior attacker Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md.) chipped in two.

The second half was even between St. Mary's and York as both sides found the back of the net three times in the final 30 minutes. The Seahawks edged YCP, 13-12 in shots; 12-9 in ground balls; and 4-3 in draw controls during the second stanza. The squads alternated the opening goals of the half before Wayson and Castle scored back-to-back goals for York before Poffenberger notched her two unassisted goals for the 14-5 final.

The Seahawks outhustled York for the game in ground balls, 22-19, as sophomore defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scooped up four and Newman and first-year midfielder Lizzie D'Agostaro (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each had three. Decker and senior captain Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) each had two caused turnovers.

St. Mary's three goalkeepers sophomores Michelle DiMenna (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Kelly Shuman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and first-year Kayla Dunn (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) combined for eight saves and two ground balls. York's starter, junior Ashley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J.), collected eight stops in 50 minutes of action.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, March 27 when the Seahawks travel to Towson, Maryland to take on Goucher College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
