Niagara Finishes Non-Conference Play with Win over DSU

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y.- Niagara wrapped up non-conference competition with a decisive 14-4 victory over the Delaware State Hornets on Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

Ten different Purple Eagles got on the scoreboard for Niagara, who head into MAAC play with a 4-6 record, including season firsts from Jordan Turpin, Emily Fleetwood, Jaclyn Schreiber and Cassi Johnson.

"Today was another opportunity for us to improve as a group," head coach Wendy Stone said. "I am proud of the way the team played today. We are excited to get into MAAC play, and will look to continue to improve each and every time we step on the field."

The Purple Eagles controlled the tempo in the opening 30 minutes of play, outshooting the Hornets (0-8) 10-5 and established a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Niagara jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with 25:04 remaining on the clock as Carrie-Jo Farrugia, Danielle Maio and Fran Pollastro each found the back of the net.

Kiyanna Brown scored the Hornets' first score of the contest, but NU responded with the half's final goal by Turpin.

Niagara continued to dominate play in the second frame, scoring seven straight goals to grab a 11-1 lead after 14 minutes of play. The run was led by Pollastro, who scored her second and third goal of the game, as well as Schreiber who tallied her first two scores of the season.

Emily Peets would net two passed NU goaltender Paige Sasser, and Sierra Harris would add one last Hornet score in the half, as Nicole Fiorini (1 goal) and Johnson (2 goals) solidified the Purps' 14-4 victory with the final three scores

Niagara finished the game with a 32-12 advantage in shots, to earn its fourth victory of the season thus far, the most since the 2006 campaign when the Purps pocketed four wins overall.

The Purple Eagles also got scores from Paige Matecki and Courtney Pierce, while Sasser finished the game with four saves.

MAAC plays for Niagara beings in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. when it plays Marist on March 30 at 3:00 p.m.
