Shenandoah Edges Roanoke to Win Fifth in a Row

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its winning streak to five games Sunday afternoon with a 14-11 ODAC victory over Roanoke.

With the win over Roanoke (3-5, 2-1 ODAC) Shenandoah (6-1, 3-0) now has taken out two of the three teams picked ahead of it in the pre-season league poll.

SU defeated Lynchburg 17-11 last Saturday afternoon and now sits in a three-way tie with Randolph-Macon and Guilford atop the league standings.

Pre-season favorite Washington and Lee is 1/2 game behind the Hornets, Yellow Jackets and Quakers and visits a week from Wednesday in a 7:00 contest.

Junior Samantha Sisson put the hosts in front to stay with her unassisted goal at 7:30. Sisson took a feed in front, rolled right and stuck her shot past RC goalie Lauren Curtin to put the Hornets in front to stay.

Shenandoah scored the opening goal of the game at 26:29 on a Corrinne Kosmowski free position shot and held a pair of three goal leads before Roanoke made the first of two significant runs.

The Lady Maroons scored four straight from the 14:56 to 9:24 marks of the first two take its only lead, 5-4, of the contest.

Kosmowski finally snapped the scoreless streak by finishing off a feed from sophomore Liz Bereit at 8:28 and the Hornets never trailed again.

Kosmowski's goal, one of two she had on the day, started a 5-0 run for the hosts.

Junior Samantha Sisson, who led all scorers with six goals and one assist for seven points, finished the run by tallying off a Bereit assist at 23:13.

And the Roanoke rallied again.

RC scored five of the game's next six goals to tie it 10-10 with 9:30 remaining, setting up Sisson to get the game winner.

Senior Amy Rollins had the hosts final three goals, scoring at 5:24, 2:12 and :19.

Roanoke outshot its hosts 27-23 and won 15 of 27 draws. SU held a 19-18 advantage in groundballs.

Hornets goalie Ashley Cross made 11 saves.

Shenandoah hosts McDaniel on Tuesday at 7:00 in a non-league contest.
