Gannon Scores Nine Unanswered to Race Past Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio A 9-0 run that stretched both halves helped Gannon earn a 19-8 victory Sunday afternoon at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Tiffin.

Sunday's contest was a tight one for the first 18 minutes. Gannon opened the match with four consecutive goals during the first seven minutes and 42 seconds. Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) accounted for two of those goals.

It took Tiffin 13 minutes and 33 seconds to score, but the Dragons piled on three goals once they got on the board. The final tally of the run cut the deficit to 4-3 with 12:27 left in the first half.

Gannon responded by kicking its offensive unit into overdrive. The Lady Knights rattled off the final five goals of the first half to assume a 9-4 lead at the break. Christie Valentine (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored two times each during the final 9:26 of the half.

The run didn't end when the first-half horn sounded. Gannon tacked on four more goals during the opening 6:22 of the second half. Fisher netted the first two scores, before Jess Fugate (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) followed with two more for a 13-3 lead with 23:38 to play.

The match began to settle down at that point. Tiffin finally stopped the 9-0 run on Kalie Weinheimer's score at the 22:55 mark. In all, Gannon held Tiffin scoreless for 19 minutes and 32 seconds during the match's decisive run. The Dragons drew within 16-8, before the Lady Knights scored the final three goals of the match to capture a 19-8 victory. The final run included the first two goals of the season for Heather Vouros (Victor, N.Y./Victor).

Fisher led all goal scorers on both teams with five goals to go along with two assists. Neagle was the point leader, recording four goals and a team-high four assists to equal eight points. Fugate also found the back of the net four times in addition to dishing out a pair of assists.

Valentine and Vouros added three and two goals, respectively. Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) completed the scoring with a goal of her own.

Gannon out-shot Tiffin 43-23, including a 24-10 edge during the first half. Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) turned away 11 shots between the pipes. Chrissy Yoest (Erie, Pa./McDowell) logged the final 5:05 during her first collegiate action, recording one save.

Head coach Lindsey Lowman's club improved to 3-2 overall with its second consecutive victory. Tiffin dropped to 1-6. Gannon returns to action Wednesday, March 27 against Edinboro at Gannon University Field. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
