Detroit Drops Closely Contested Match at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. (3/24/2013) -- Erin Campbell (Orangeville, Ont./Orangeville), Kylie Birney (Plymouth, Mich./Ladywood), and Zaynib Hamze (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) each had multi-goal games for Detroit, including the third straight for Campbell and Hamze, but in another close game the University of Detroit Mercy fell, 12-10, to the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Campbell scored in her fourth straight game and had three goals on the day for Detroit (1-9). She has now registered three or more goals in her last three contests. She has 11 goals in her last four games and holds a share of the team lead in points with 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points. Hamze has multi-goal games in each of her last three contests and nine goals over that span and both Hamze and Campbell have 22 points in 10 games.

Six different Titans scored against Winthrop (6-5) as Lindsey Saunders (Pasadena, Md./Northeast), Tessa Keuler (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) and Megan Callahan (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) all added single markers for Detroit.

Three goals from Winthrop in a span of 1:09 gave the Eagles an early 3-0 lead with 24:49 remaining in the first half before Keuler scored her 11th goal of the 2013 campaign to put Detroit on the scoreboard with 18:32 to play.

Birney chipped in her 7th of the year to make it 3-2 before a pair of Eagle goals made it 5-2 for the home squad.

Right before the half, Saunders scored her 10th of the year taking a pass from Hamze and making it a 5-3 game heading into the break.

The second half started with a Winthrop goal 42 seconds into the half to make it 6-3 before the Titans came storming back with three of the next four goals. Campbell scored her first of the game followed by Hamze who netted her 16th of the season. A Winthrop goal followed to put the lead at two once again but Detroit senior captain Callahan countered for the Titans to make it a 7-6 game with 24:13 to play in the contest.

The Eagles scored the next three to increase the lead to 10-6 with 12:02 left in regulation time but the Titans were not ready to lie down.

Campbell scored her second of the day on a free position and Birney added her second of the day off an assist from Keuler and then Campbell completed the hat trick with her third goal and 15th of the season to cut it to 10-9 with 7:42 to play.

The Eagles ended the rally with a goal to make it a two-goal game but once again, UDM came back and Hamze's second of the day made it a one-goal difference with 3:31 on the clock.

The final goal of the game from Winthrop in the final 1:31 and the game would end 12-10 in favor of the Eagles.

Detroit's second half effort produced a 14-11 shooting advantage and the Titans finished ahead in that category by one overall, 27-26. Winthrop controlled the draw controls 18-6 and held an 18-13 advantage in ground balls.

The next game for the Titans will be in Ohio against Big East foe Cincinnati on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. ET
